This Bulletin Supersedes GRP 6 # 2/00 dated 9-8-00.

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (996) / 911 Carrera 4 (996)

Model Year:
As of 1999 (X)

Concern:
Noise elimination in the hardtop.

Information:

The following information contains the most up to date specifications for repairing complaints of noises in the hardtop. Before beginning the work, please road test the vehicle to isolate the area where the noise is coming from. Then refer to the technical bulletin for assistance. After completing work, road test the vehicle again to confirm the noise was eliminated.

Note:
Before removing the hardtop, make sure the locking element is not turned past the stop. Turning the locking element past the stop will over tighten the hardtop, causing it to make noises. (Refer to illustration). If the hardtop has been found to be overtightened, please inform your customer of the proper procedure for latching the hardtop.

General:

Refer to complaints and you will find repair measures for various noise complaints on the hardtop. Some of the measures described have already been introduced in standard production; further measures will be implemented as needed.

Apart from the complaints listed and the relevant repair, other causes of noise may occur on the hardtop; it may be necessary to seek these causes systematically.

Before beginning work, isolate the problem noise during a test drive with the hardtop fitted. If possible, conduct the road test with the customer. Determine the type of noise (e.g. rattling, clicking, grating, crackling or creaking noises).

After repairing the presumed cause of the noise, conduct another road test to ensure the quality of the repair.

For work on eliminating noises, the hardtop should be removed from the vehicle and placed upside down (Figure 1).

General:
After repairing the presumed sources of noise test-drive the vehicle with the hardtop fitted.
