Work Procedure
Replacing inner door release handle and bowden cable.1. Disconnect battery and cover positive terminal.
Caution:
There is risk of injury from the airbag or power window regulator (comfort function)! Wait at least one minute after disconnecting the battery before proceeding with further work.
2. Remove door panel. Disassemble and remove inner door release handle. Refer to the 911 Carrera (996) Technical Manual, Group 7, Section 70 59 37 - Disassembling and assembling door trim panel.
2.1 Fit the new inner door release handle onto the door panel.
3. Remove molded foam piece from the inside of the door in the area of the door lock.
4. Remove mount (Figure 1, arrow) from the door.
5. Detach the connection piece from the door lock to the outer door handle (Figure 2, arrow). Do this by moving the sliding part of the connection piece inward and unclipping the actuating shaft from the door handle.
6. Remove the bowden cable cover out of the support bracket on the door lock using a screwdriver.
7. Unscrew the door lock fastening screws. The M 8 x 14 screws (micro-encapsulated) must be replaced!
8. Move the door lock in the door inward up to the cutout.
8.1 Detach the bowden cable on the door lock. Install the new bowden cable. Press the bowden cable cover into the support bracket.
Warning:
Damage is possible by bending the bowden cable at the hook.
> The hook of the bowden cable is pressed into the end piece of the cover for protection during transport and assembly (Figure 3).
> Pull the hook out of the end piece only after installation at the inner door release handle.
8.2 Remove the connection piece (Fig. 2) at the actuating lever of the door lock and install new connection piece.
9. Install door lock.
Warning:
First engage the actuating lever in its basic position (Figure 4) on the door lock.
> Do this by engaging the spring (Figure 4, arrow) into the hook of the actuating lever using a slotted screwdriver or flat nosed pliers. This allows for pre-triggering of the door lock.
9.1 Fasten door lock with the new M 8 x 14 screws. Tightening torque: 20 Nm (15 ft. lb.)
9.2 Engage the connection piece from the door lock to the outer door handle (Figure 2). Do this by clipping the actuating shaft of the outer door handle into the connection piece. Move the sliding piece outward until it can be heard engaging.
9.3 Actuate the outer door release handle until the engaging spring can be heard to disengage out of the actuating lever.
10. Refasten the mount with M 6 x 16 screws. Tightening torque: 10 Nm (8 ft. lb.)
11. Reinstall molded foam piece in the door lock area.
12. Thread the hook of the bowden cable into the inner actuating mechanism from underneath (Figure 5, arrow 1).
12.1 Pull on the end piece of the cover until the hook moves freely.
12.2 Thread the end piece into the support bracket of the inner actuating mechanism and push forward until it engages (Figure 5).
13. Install door panel, see the 911 Carrera (996) Technical Manual, Section 70 59 37 - Disassembling and assembling door trim panel.
14. Reconnect the battery. Enter radio code if necessary.
