Oil Leak From Front Differential Flange Seal

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera 4 (996) only

Model Year:
As of 1999 (X)

Concern:
Oil leaking from left half-shaft (axle) flange, front differential.

Information:
The sealing surface of some left halt-shaft flanges (at the radial seal contact area) was not machined to specification and could result in oil leaking at the half-shaft flange seal. As of the production date below, the surface processing procedure of the left half-shaft flange was improved. The improved half-shaft flanges are marked with a white or green paint dot. (The marks are on the side not machined, and are not visible when drive shaft is installed.)

When repairing a front differential oil leak at the left half-shaft flange/seal on vehicles produced prior to the below VINs, the left half-shaft flange should be replaced (with the improved version). The radial seal and snap ring should also be replaced.

Production change as of November 10, 1999, and from VINs:
99 8Y5 62 0545 Carrera 4 Coupe
99 XYS 65 1479 Carrera 4 Cabrio
