5X00IN01 Safety instructions

Safety instructions

The following safety instructions must be complied with when performing body repair work:

- Observe the safety regulations for handling vehicles equipped with airbags during body repair work!

1. Remove ignition key
2. After the ignition key has been removed, the alignment work can begin after a waiting time of 1 minute.
(There is a danger of the airbag unit firing if the ignition key is not removed.)

- Under certain circumstances, the removal of components changes the vehicle's centre of gravity. It may therefore be necessary to secure the vehicle to the hoist.

- In areas that are used for body repair work, no other vehicles may be parked unprotected (danger of fire from flying sparks, damage to batteries, paintwork and glass).

- During grinding and welding work in the area of the fuel tank or of parts containing fuel, extreme caution is required. If necessary, such parts must be removed. Consideration must also be given to the surrounding area.

- No welding, soldering or hot-air heating may take place on parts of the filled air-conditioning system. This also applies to welding and soldering work on the vehicle when there is a danger of parts of the air-conditioning system heating up.

- While drying after painting work, the temperature burden on the vehicle must not exceed two hours at a maximum temperature of 80 °C.

To protect electronic control units from overvoltage during electric arc welding, the following safety measures must be taken:

- When welding work is extensive, the electronic control units must be removed.

- Remove clamp from negative terminal of battery and cover negative terminal of battery.

- Connect the earth connection of the electric arc welding equipment as near as possible to the welding point on the part to be welded. Ensure that there are no electrically insulated parts between the earth connection and the welding point.

- Do not touch electronic control units or electric cables with the earth connection or the welding electrode.

Safety measures for working with naked flame, with flying sparks or with high temperatures (welding, grinding, working with hot-air blowers) in the area of the battery or in the area of the battery vent-hose opening:

- Remove battery and store outside the danger area.
- Blow compressed air through vent hose. Close hose ends. The vent hose opens out in front, above the battery, via an angled piece in the right wheel housing.

Treatment of electronic control units after accident repair

The replacement of electronic control units after an accident is necessary if at least one of the following conditions is met:

- The housing is noticeably deformed or damaged.
- The supporting surface or bracket is deformed (the unit shows no external damage).
- The plug connection is damaged or corroded by moisture.
- Functional checks on or self-diagnosis of the unit reveals the fault
"Control unit defective".

If electronic components, e.g. ABS control unit, have been removed for repair work and are then reused, they must be given a functional check after installation in accordance with the existing specifications.
