Child Seat With Top Tether Attachment Straps

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (996)

Model Year:
As of 1999 (X)

Concerns:
Accessing the anchoring point for the child seat equipped with the "Top Tethering" system.

Information:

As of MY '99, a sheetmetal bracket has been attached to the body of the 911 Carrera to provide an anchoring point for the straps of the Top Tether child-seat (Figure 1, arrow).

If a child seat with the "Top Tether" system is installed in a MY '99 vehicle, a foldable opening must be cut into the rear wall lining in the area of the sheetmetal bracket. To do this, it is necessary to remove the rear wall lining.

As of MY '00, the rear wall lining in the area of the sheetmetal bracket has been perforated (Figure 2, arrows). This makes the access to the Top Tether fastening point possible, after the perforation is cut out. For MY '00, it is not necessary to remove the rear wall lining.

Tools:
Sharp knife (carpet knife)

Work Procedure:

Cutting an access opening in the rear wall lining on MY '99 vehicles.

1-0. Lift the rear cover (Figure 3, Item A) up and out. Unclip the rear roof lining (Item B) towards the front and lift the rear wall lining out.

1-1. On the rear side of the rear wall lining, there are two recesses for the fastening brackets in the back of the foam. The recess should be selected depending on the installation position of the child seat (left or right side.)

1.2 Draw the cutting line in the recess with a ballpoint pen or felt tip (Figures 4 and 5 dashed line).

Caution!
Flawed appearance along the cut line on the carpet side due to uneven cutting!
> Use a sharp carpet knife.
> Before cutting, check again that the recess coincides with the vehicle side selected for the child seat.
> Make the cut along the dashed line and at right angles to the carpet or the carrier material.

1.3. Install the removed parts again in reverse order.
