Parts Information:

Work Procedure:

In order to remedy noises in the trim panels, the following items must first be removed only if necessary.

Trim to be removed:
Removing the rear side section - Coupe

Removal procedure:

1. Fold down the rear seat. Loosen the holding pegs with a 6 mm Allen wrench.

2. Pull off the seat belt cover in an upward direction. Remove the Phillips screw securing the panel.

3. Pull off the trim panel.

4. Unplug the speaker before removing the trim panel from the car.

Removing the rear side section - Cabriolet

1. Fold down the rear seat. Loosen the holding pegs with a 6 mm Allen wrench.

2. Pull off the seat belt cover in a forward direction. Unscrew the Phillips head screw securing the panel.

3. Press out the windstop collar using a plastic spatula.

4. Remove the speaker.

5. Remove the screw from underneath from the sheet metal bracket of the side panel.

6. Pull off the trim panel and remove from the car.

Removing the B-pillar trim Coupe

1. Lift up the clothes hook bracket at the bottom with a plastic spatula and pivot out.

2. Carefully pull off the sash guide cover.

3. Remove the bolt securing the sash guide mount.

4. Remove the screw on the B-pillar mount.

Removing the C-pillar trim - Coupe Removing the A-pillar trim Coupe/Cabriolet

1. Pull the C-pillar trim inwards and unclip.

1. Pull the A-pillar trim along the roof frame (Coupe) and wind shield frame (Cabriolet) towards the inside, then pull the trim outwards out of the retaining clip in the dashboard.

Complaint 1:
Crackling, creaking and/or rattling noises on the rear side section trim panel on the Coupe or Cabriolet.

Cause # 1:
Movement between the upper and lower sections where they are attached to each other. The clamping washers are loose (figure 3, arrows x).

Repair:
Using an 8 to 10 mm socket or suitable pipe press the clamping washers on tight with gentle hammer blows. To ensure the connection is permanently tight, either glue the washer in place with the hot glue gun or melt over the peg which the clamping washer is secured to with a soldering iron.

Crackling, creaking and/or rattling noises on the rear side section trim panel on the Coupe or Cabriolet.

Cause # 2:
Cabriolet only. The locating peg at the edge of the rear side section trim on the top causes noises in the mounting point on the auxiliary frame (metal). The reinforcing ribs (figure 5, arrows c and d) on the inside of the rear side section trim are coming into contact with screws on the convertible-top holder.

Repair:
Deburr the mounting point opening in the auxiliary frame (rear wall) and stick a 15 mm felt strip over the locating peg on the rear side section trim that enters the mounting point (see arrow in figure 4). Remove the reinforcing rib (see arrow c in figure 5) with a sharp knife or side cutters. Stick a 25 mm wide felt strip over the ribs (see arrow d in figure 5).

Complaint 2:
Creaking noises in the rear side section trim at the pin for the rear seat back locking mechanism.

Cause:
The collar (bezel) of the rear seat back locking pin (see arrow in figure 6) was filled with hot glue during production to prevent it from turning when the pin is tightened. The extensive contact surface of the hot glue adhesive may cause creaking noises on the cover of the rear side section trim (see a in figure 7).

Repair:
Install a new collar with reinforcing ribs (see b in figure 7). Do not fill the inside of the new collar with hot glue.
Collar for Coupe - 996 522 097 04 01C
Collar for Cabriolet - 996 522 097 05 01C

Complaint 3:
Creaking noises in the rear side section trim due to the collar (cover) or the windstop mounting point (Cabriolet only).

Cause:
The plastic collar for the side windstop mounting point where it contacts the rear side section trim. During driving, slight movements may cause creaking noises.

Repair:
Remove the collar, stick felt approx. 8 mm wide on the contact area touching the rear side section trim. Pay attention to the visible edge (see arrow in figure 8).

Complaint 4:
Crackling, creaking and/or rattling noises on the A and C-pillar trim panels.

Cause:
Fastening clips on the trim panels are loose. Retention force too low.

Repair:
Install new yellow coated fastening clips, 999 507 479 09 (item a in figure 9) on the panels and cover with a piece of tricot tape, 999 551 134 40 (item b in figure 9).

Note:
Each time a trim panel is removed the fastening clips must be replaced. Use only the new style clips with a yellow coating, together with the tricot tape.

Complaint 5:
Crackling and creaking noises on the leather covered A, B, C-pillar trim, and rear side section panels.

Cause:
Leather overlaps (double layer) on the corners and edges on the rear side of the trims (see arrow a in figure 10).

Repair:
Peel back the leather where it overlaps. Trim the leather back so it won't touch. After trimming back the leather, reglue it back to the panel.

Complaint 6:
Creaking noises at the rear roof lining panel (panel E in figure 1).

Cause:
Roof lining is rubbing laterally on the rear side section trims. Clamping effect of the fastening clips too low, possibly old style clip installed.

Repair:

1. Stick felt strips approx. 1 mm from the edge a (item a in figure 11) on the side areas of the roof lining. If there are felt strips that are already installed, check to see if they are positioned correctly. Replace them if necessary.

2. Stick felt strips on the locating peg (item b in figure 11) and the holding peg (item a in figure 11).

3. Install new version fastening clips, 999 507 558 02, figure 12.

Complaint 7:
Rattling noises at the seat belt height adjuster in the area of the B-pillar (up to and including model year '99).

Cause:
The contacting points of the seatbelt height adjuster are rattling inside the B-pillar trim.

Repair:
Apply felt strips at the points indicated by the arrows in figure 13

Complaint 8:
Coupe only. Rattling and/or creaking noises at the roof lining (Fh) at the rear.

Cause:
Support ribs of the roof lining at the rear (Fh) are in contact with the inside of the roof.

Repair:
Cover the side support ribs (arrow a in figures 14 and 15) with felt strips. Cover the retaining stays (arrow b in figures 14 and 15) at the top and bottom with felt strips. Check the standard foam strip (arrow c in figures 14 and 15) for correct seating and damage. The foam strip must not be damaged at the ribs. Cover any damaged areas with a felt strip.

Complaint 9:
Coupe only. Rattling and/or creaking noises at the roof lining (Fv) at the rear.

Cause:
The side support ribs of the roof lining at the front (Fv) are in contact with the inside of the roof. The fastening clips could also be loose.

Repair:
Cover the side support ribs (arrow a in figure 16 and 17) on the left and right with felt strips. Replace the 6 fastening clips and cover with the tricot tape (arrow b in figure 16 and 17).

Complaint 10:
Cracking noises at the frame of the roof lining (F - Headliner) for the sliding/tilting roof

Cause:
Bonding of the roof lining (headliner) with the inner sunroof frame. In production, the roof lining is adhered to the upper side of the frame with adhesive. The adhesive has been applied in too wide of an area. This will cause the headliner too stick and detach itself to the inner part of the frame. The sound produced by this will vary in intensity depending on the temperature.

Repair:
Apply the grease free chalk to neutralize the area of excessive adhesive (area Y in figure 18). Be careful not to apply chalk to the area marked X in figure 18. This area must secure the headliner.

Concluding work:
After repairing the presumed noise sources, install all removed parts, e.g. instrument mount, defroster covers, alarm readiness cover, passenger's airbag, air ducts, side vents and speakers. Connect the battery and enter the radio code if necessary. Road test the vehicle.

Note for reassembly of panels.
If the interior panels have to be removed, make sure the clips that hold on the interior panels (A-pillar, C-pillar, etc.) are replaced before reinstalling them. Reusing the old clips on the vehicle may lead to new noises. Install a new yellow clip (A) part number, 999 507 479 09 on the interior panel. Then install the tricot insulating tape (B) part number, 999 551 134 40 over the clip. See figure 19.
