Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Work Procedure

Setting up the hardtop for repairs.

- Remove hardtop.

Clean outside of hardtop. Open all four side windows. Pull cover of the front locking lever down and off. Open front latch.

Carefully remove the rear round plastic covers on both sides of the hardtop using the unlocking handle (Figure 2).

Insert the unlocking handle into the rear hardtop locking elements one after the other and turn them counterclockwise as far as they will go. The reference point (red; it can be seen from the outside through the rear window) must be aligned with the marking on the hexagon socket head bolt at the end (Figure 3- applicable only to the previous version).

Caution!
Hands can be trapped between the hardtop and the convertible top compartment lid!
> Evenly lift the hardtop at both sides.

Together with a second person, lift the hardtop out of the locking elements at rear and carefully remove from the vehicle to the rear.

Set hardtop down (without assembly fixture). Place hardtop upside down on a soft and clean surface.

- Set hardtop down (with assembly fixture).

For repairs using the hardtop holding fixture (see Technical Manual, Group 6, Page 61-123 ft), first place it with the inner side facing down.

Note:
Make sure the hardtop is clean before you start the work. This will prevent scratches in the paint.

Lock the hardtop down with the front and rear latches. Lift and remove the cover moldings on the left and right sides using a plastic spatula (arrows in figure 4).

Note:
The roof strip clips are destroyed when they are removed and must always be replaced. Unlatch the hardtop and flip it over, placing the outer side down on the assembly fixture.

- Install hardtop.

After finishing work, clean the inside of the hardtop. If the cover mouldings were removed, refit them as described in the 911 Carrera (996) Technical Manual, Group 6, Page 61-97.

Fit the hardtop on the vehicle again as described in the 911 Carrera (996) Technical Manual, Group 6, Page 61-72 ff.
