Complaint 6.1-11
Complaint 6.1Rattling from the area of the roof frame seal above the door window on the left or right-hand side.
Cause:
The screw connections of the retaining rail for the roof frame seal loosen, causing the retaining rail to strike against the roof frame.
Repair:
Part 1. The lateral roof frame seal above the door window is fastened to the hardtop with a total of 9 screws and expanding nuts (b & d, figure 15). The seal is pressed into the retaining rail above the door window (a, figure 15), while the rear area of the seal is permanently attached to the retaining rail (c, figure 15).
Check the tightness of the screws. This is accomplished by pushing back the seal to expose the screws (arrow, figure 16). Retighten if necessary.
Part 2. If the screws can not be tightened, the expanding nuts will have to be replaced. To replace the expanding nuts, loosen all screws and remove the seal. Unclip and remove the expanding nuts.
Complaint 6.2
Rattling from the area of the roof frame seal above the door window on the left or right-hand side.
Cause:
It is possible for the door window when it's up to strike the head of the fifth fastening screw. This causes raffling noises when the vehicle is driven (figure 15).
Repair:
Part 1. Replace the existing screw with a countersunk screw (arrow, figure 17). Before installing the new countersunk screw, the head must be ground flat to ensure enough clearance to the window (figure 18).
Part 2. If replacing the screw does not eliminate the noise, the window will have to be adjusted. Technical Manual, Group 6, Page 57-5 if addresses the window adjustment.
Complaint 7.1:
Squeaking from the area of the roof frame seal above the door window on the left and right hand side.
Cause:
Roof frame seal not flocked. The movement between the side window and the hardtop seal when the vehicle is driven will cause this noise.
Repair:
Replace the seal with a flocked version. See Technical Manual, Group 6, page 61-81 if for removal and page 61-96 ff for installation. If you replace the seal, replace and modify the fifth screw which holds in the retaining strip (complaint 6.2).
Note:
This seal was introduced into production on 8-23-99
Complaint 7.2
Squeaking from the area of the roof frame seal above the door window on the left or right-hand side.
Cause:
The movement between the base of the seal (H, figure 19), the side of the roof frame and the retaining rail.
Repair:
Remove the five rear fastening screws of the roof frame seal at the side. Lift the seal and pull it rearward out of the front retaining rail. Remove the seal from the retaining rail. Spray the base of the seal with Krytox.
Do not spray the part of the seal that touches the window. Be careful not to spray the interior parts of the hardtop. Press the seal back into the retaining strip, and screw it back into the rear.
Complaint 8:
Squeaking from the rear area of the hardtop.
Cause:
The rear hardtop seal (I, figure 20) that contacts the convertible compartment lid is not flocked.
Repair:
Pull the seal off the rear of the hardtop and where it pushes into the roof frame seal. Clean the bonding surface of the hardtop with solvent. Insert the new seal first into the roof frame seal at the corners. Then remove the adhesive backing and press the seal firmly onto the hardtop.
Note:
This seal was introduced into production on 7-16-99
Complaint 9:
Rattling from the C-pillar area of the hardtop on the left or right hand side.
Cause:
The hardtop-locking element (L, figure 21) does not engage without play, causing movement between the locking and the support.
Repair:
A new hardtop-locking element is currently being redesigned.
Complaint 10:
Rattling from the area of the trim below the rear window on the left and right hand side.
Cause:
The round plastic covers which cover for hardtop latching pin holes on the rear trim panels (D, figure 22) are loose.
Repair:
Check to see if the covers are properly installed. The raised nub in the cover (arrow a, figure 22) is exactly opposite the nub in the trim panel. If necessary, engage it in the correct position. If play still exists, cut a felt strip (10 x 15 mm) to size and stick it in the opening of the trim panel where the retaining lug of the cover engages (arrow b, figure 22).
Complaint 11:
Clicking from the area of the trim below the rear window.
Cause:
The sheet metal panels are riveted together in he area of the interior trim at the rear of the hardtop (arrow, figure 23). When the hardtop is painted, the paint penetrates between the sheet metal flanges and bonds them together. The flexing of the hardtop causes the paint to break apart at the flanges and that produces loud clicking noises.
Repair:
The paint bond must be broken between the panels. Insert a small slotted screw driver between the riveted joints of the sheet metal flanges. Lever them slightly apart until the clicking sound of the paint breaking can not be heard (arrows, figure 24).
