Oddments Tray Cover

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (996), 911 Carrera 4 (996)

Model Year:
As of 1999 (X)

Concern:
Broken center console oddments tray cover

Information:
If the center console oddments tray cover is in the fully open position, a high rearward or lateral force can cause it to break away from its mounting. In the past, a broken oddments tray cover necessitated the replacement of the complete center console. A retrofit/repair kit is now available to repair a broken oddments tray cover. It is no longer necessary to replace a complete center console for a broken oddments tray cover!

The retrofit/repair kit consists of a metal hinge plate that is pop-riveted to the center console. (Figure 1, arrow) The pop-rivets expand into two U-brackets, for additional strength and support. A steel hinge pin is inserted into a completely captive bore, and attaches the cover to the center console. The retrofit kit significantly improves the strength of the oddments tray cover mounting point.

Parts Info:

Tools Required:
Philips screwdriver (medium)
Torx wrench T1O
Hand saw (small)
Small flat file
Hand drill
Vacuum cleaner with a small nozzle
4.0 mm drill bit
Pop-riveting tool
Hammer
3 mm drift punch

Work Procedure:
Retrofitting new hinge kit to the center console

1. Disassembling center console/oddments tray cover

1.1. Remove the screws on the inside of the oddments tray console cover and pull cover out toward the front.

1.2. Remove the rebound strap from the lower section of the cover by unscrewing both the fastening screws. Then remove the strap retaining bracket.

1.3. Remove the hinge mounting pin on the lower section of the cover, from the un-milled (smooth) side, using a drift punch. Remove the cover spring.

1.4. Carefully remove any remains of the plastic hinge on the center console with a small hand saw. Smooth the support surface for the hinge plate with a file.

2. Installing retrofit kit

2.1. Fully insert both U-brackets into the rear of the center console as shown in Figure 2, arrow A. (The open side of the U-brackets point downward.)

2.2. Position the hinge plate on the center console using the two locating studs as a guide. (Figure 2, arrow B). Using a 4.0 mm drill bit, drill two holes through the center console and U-brackets, (arrow C) using the hinge plate as a drilling template. Vacuum up any drilling particles.
Note:
Ensure that the hinge plate and the U-brackets do not shift during the drilling process!

2.3. Rivet the hinge plate and the U-bracket together with the supplied pop-rivets. (Figure 3, arrows D) After riveting, ensure there is no free-play, and that the installation is solid.

2.4. Re-assemble the center console cover, re-mounting the rebound strap in the lower section of the cover.

2.5. Mount the lower section of the cover and the cover spring onto the center console using the supplied hinge pin.

Important:
Insert the unmilled (smooth) end of the hinge pin into cover first. Drive in pin with a 3 mm drift punch.

2.6. Mount the upper section of the cover to the lower cover with fastening screws.
