Noises in the rear seat well area due to relative movements of the transverse reinforcement tube.

Information:





An additional transverse reinforcement tube has been installed in the rear seat well area. See figure 1. During driving the relative movement of the reinforcement tube may come into contact with the rear seat well panel. This condition may result in audible "clinking" type noises.

The reinforcement tube was introduced into production on April 12, 2001 from the following VINs:

99 91S 62 2813 - Coupe
99 81S 65 4046 - Cabriolet.

To eliminate the noise, felt tape has been installed in new vehicles between the reinforcement tube and the rear seat well panel. The felt tape was installed in production on May 14, 2001 from the following VINs:

99 91S 62 3090 - Coupe
99 81S 65 4440 - Cabriolet

If a customer complains of "clinking noises in the rear seat well area", felt tape can be installed on vehicles that fall within the VIN range indicated above.

Part Number Description

999 551 140 40 Felt tape (45 x 35 x 5 mm).
Up to 4 pieces of felt tape
may be required.

Work Procedure:
Installing the felt tape between the reinforcement tube and the rear seat well panel.

1.0 Move the driver's and passenger's seat forward.

2.0 Starting from the tunnel, remove the left and right rear seat bottom cushions by lifting the cushions upwards and outwards.

3.0 Lift the floor carpet left and right of the heel plate and fold forwards.

4.0 Lift the heel plate carpet left and right and fold backwards.

5.0 Check the distance between the reinforcement tube and the rear seat well on the left and right hand sides.

If the gap between the reinforcement tube and the rear seat well panel is greater than 4.5 mm, insert two pieces of felt tape.

If the gap between the reinforcement tube and the rear seat well panel is less than 4.5 mm, insert one piece of felt tape.





See figure 2 (depicts right side only) for proper positioning of the felt tape.

6.0 Insert heel plate carpet, floor carpet and rear seat cushions on the left and right hand sides.
