Dual Mass Flywheel Check Procedure

Vehicle Type:
911 Turbo (996) / 911 GT 2 (996)

Model Year:
As of 01 (1)

Equipment:
Manual transmission

Concerns:
Complaints about the dual mass flywheel (DMF) due to transmission noises (rattling, knocking noise):

The noises occur...

- at engine start and/or

- at load shift and/or

- during idling and/or

- when switching off the engine.

Situation:
Dual mass flywheels which have been returned under warranty.

Information:
Dual mass flywheels which have been returned under warranty to the Porsche AG Service Test Center are subsequently tested for proper function by the manufacturer. Test results have shown that, apart from a few exceptions, the dual mass flywheels involved in complaints are determined to be in proper working order.

Refer to check procedure for the assessment of DMFs involved in complaints.

Important:
A test of a DMF must only take place if a complaint has been received concerning transmission noises (rattling, knocking) in the operational or driving conditions stated above.

Procedure:
Assessment of DMFs involved in complaints:

The twist test on the DMF shown must be carried out by hand and without any tools. The test can be carried out in installed or removed status. (In removed status, a second person is required to counter hold).

The twist distance must be measured at the external diameter of the DMF (Figure 1, arrow).
