Clicking Noises from the Rear of the Vehicle

Vehicle Type:
911 GT2 (996)

Model Year:
MY 2002 (2)

Concern:
Clicking noises from the rear of the vehicle

Information:

Clicking noises from the rear spring struts may occur in some MY '02 GT2 vehicles.

To eliminate the noises, a rubber washer (Figure 1, Arrow A) has been installed between the spring plate and the mount, and a plastic tube is fitted on the last spring turn on the lower end of the spring (Figure 1, Arrow B) on the left and right rear spring struts.

To prevent the possibility of rear strut noises, the washers and plastic tubes were installed in production as of March 5th, 2002, from the following VIN: 99 92S 69 6120

Part Information

Work Procedure:

Retrofitting the rubber washer and hose sections on the rear-axle spring struts.

1. Remove both rear spring struts.

2. Disassemble both spring struts.

3. Installing the plastic tube on the lower part of the coil spring.

3.1 Apply a generous coat of assembly oil on the spring in the area where the hose section is to be installed (Figure 2, Arrow B).

3.2 Coat the inside of the hose section with assembly oil, push the hose section onto the spring and position it (Figure 2, Arrow B). It is important that the hose section is centered with respect to the end of the spring.

3.3 After the tube is installed, apply more assembly oil between the hose and spring.

4.0 Insert one rubber washer (Figure 2, Arrow A) between the spring strut mount (item 1) and the spring plate (item 2) of each spring strut and assemble both struts.

5.0 Install both spring struts.
