Front Axle Spring Strut Clicking Noises
Vehicle Type:
911 GT2 (996)
Model Year:
'01 (1) and '02 (2)
Concerns:
Front axle coil springs on the spring struts: Grating or clicking noise when steering wheel locks.
Information:
If the steering wheel is used when the car is standing or during maneuvering or driving slow, it is possible that grating or clicking noises may occur occasionally in the area of the coil spring seat (Figure 1, Item 1). The noises are caused by the coil spring (Item 2).
As of July 2, 2002, the following changes have been implemented on the front axle spring struts:
- Omission of the rubber ring between the coil spring and the spring seat (Arrow A),
- Installation of the coil spring with the progressive side facing upwards (Arrow B),
- A long piece of hose (Arrow C) fitted on the progressive coil side over a length of approx. 2 spring coils. (Previously, a short piece of hose was fitted in this area.)
In the event of a complaint, the measures described above can be carried out retrospectively on the spring strut.
Introduction - July 2, 2002, from the following VIN:
99 22S 69 6203 USA
Parts Information:
Part Number Description
996 343 931 90 New/parts set (for 2 spring struts), consisting of: Piece of hose (2 ea.), Assembly oil
996 343 561 91 Nut M14 x 1 for piston rod, (2 ea. required).
The parts are available from Porsche Motorsports North America (PMNA).
Work Procedure:
Retrofitting of the front axle spring struts of vehicles model years '01 and '02 (removing rubber ring, filling long piece of hose, modified coil spring installation position).
1. Remove and disassemble both front spring struts (see 911 Turbo Technical Manual, Group 4).
2. On the progressive side (Arrow B) of the coil springs (Figure 2, Item 2) in the area of the contact point at the end of the spring, work on the following spring coils as described below.
Identification of the progressive side of the spring: The first three spring coils on one side of the spring are closer together than the other spring coils.
Caution!
Damage to the surface protection of the coil spring during removal/installation of the piece of hose!
> Remove the previous piece of hose by hand. If not possible, carefully cut the hose open with a knife.
> Do not grip the spring in a vice or clamp it in any other way.
> In order to fit the long piece of hose, a second person is required to hold the spring tight.
2.1 Apply a generous coat of assembly oil on the spring in the area (approx. 2 coils) where the piece of hose is to be fitted (Arrow C).
2.2 Coat the inside of the hose section with assembly oil, push the hose section onto the spring and position it (Arrow C).
Note:
The end of the hose section must be positioned approx. 10 mm from the end of the spring (Inset Z).
2.3 After fitting the hose section, apply more assembly oil between the hose and spring.
3. Assemble both spring struts without the rubber ring (Arrow A) (see 911 Turbo Technical Manual, Group 4). Install the spring with the progressive side facing upwards (Arrow B). Identification of the progressive side of the spring:
Spring coils are narrower, part numbers (text) clearly legible on the spring in the installation position.
4. Install both spring struts and perform suspension alignment.
