Airbag Warning Light On: Fault Code 1217 and 1218

Vehicle Type:
Cayenne/Cayenne S/Cayenne Turbo

Model Year:
As of '03 (3)

Concern:
Side airbag

- Airbag warning light activated on the multi-function display,
- fault code 1217 and/or 1218 in the fault memory of the airbag control module.

Information:

During the period from 11-13-2003 up until 12-17-2003, vehicles were equipped with side airbags with an incorrectly installed ground lead. This can result in the ground lead being chafed or pinched which, intern, leads to the following fault type on the affected vehicles:

The airbag warning light is activated on the multi-function display and the fault code

- 1217 Ignition circuit, driver's side airbag and/or the fault code

- 1218 Ignition circuit, passenger's side airbag is stored in the fault memory of the airbag control module in combination with the fault type short circuit to ground, respectively.

If this fault type occurs on one of the affected vehicles, this means that the side airbag identified via the fault code and the side airbag on the other side, respectively, must he replaced regardless of whether the fault was discovered through a fault memory record or not.

In addition, the airbag plug connection on both front seats must also be removed and replaced with crimp cable connectors, see Cayenne Technical Information Bulletin, Group 6, # 11/04.

Affected Vehicles

Work Procedure:

Replace both side airbags and remove airbag plug connections.

Requirement:

The fault code 1217 and/or the fault code 1218 with the fault type short circuit to ground is stored in the fault memory of the airbag control module.

1. Replace side airbags, see POSES, Workshop Manual, Cayenne, Group 6, 69 63 19 - Removing and installing side airbag.

Note:
When installing the backrest frame, the plug connection between the electrical wiring harness and the new side airbag must be removed and the leads must be crimped with cable connectors, see Cayenne Technical Information Bulletin, Group 6, # 11/04.

2. The replacement of the side airbags must be documented in the "Cayenne Warranty & Maintenance" booklet.

Remove the tear-off sticker showing the manufacturing number from the new parts before installing them and stick the sticker onto the blank fields provided for this purpose in the vehicle's Warranty and Maintenance brochure.

3. Connect diagnostic tester, read out the fault memory of the airbag control module and delete.

4. Read out the fault memory of the airbag control module again to ensure that no more faults are stored.
