Entry & Drive System Fault Types
Vehicle Type:
Cayenne S/Cayenne Turbo
Model Year:
As of '03 (3)
Concern:
Complaints related to the Kessy system, "Porsche Entry & Drive" (I No. 4F2, 4F6)
New information in this bulletin update:
Step 3 - Key is not recognized in the vehicle - has been expanded to include remedial measure for fitting a shield.
Step 4 - Immobilizer/Kessy control unit cannot be coded - the information relating to teaching the control unit with ignition switched off has been changed.
Information:
Below are instructions for troubleshooting complaints in relation to the Porsche Entry & Drive system.
Diagnosis software version 16.0 or higher is required for working with the Porsche System Tester 2 (PST2).
Work Procedure:
1. All outer door momentary-switch handles do not function.
Cause: A previous diagnosis operation with the PST2 (software version lower than 16.0) automatically changed the coding of the rear control unit to the basic coding.
Remedy: Check the coding in the rear control unit using the PSJ2 (software version 16.0 or higher) and change it to "Kessy".
2. Individual outer door momentary-switch handles do not function.
Cause: Faulty outer door momentary-switch handle due to jammed/faulty momentary-switch handle.
Note: Fault type during diagnosis with the PST2, fault memory entry in the door control units and no signal for outer door momentary-switch handles in "Actual values" menu item.
Remedy: Replace the faulty outer door momentary-switch handle or handles.
3. Key is not recognized in the vehicle (vehicle key is stored in "cupholder"):
Cause: Electromagnetic interference from the main wiring harness near the cupholder affects communication between the key and vehicle when the key is stored in the cupholder. Furthermore, strong transmitters (e.g. mobile phones, Notebooks, etc.) can impair the key signal reception in the vehicle.
Remedy:
- Avoid placing the vehicle key near strong transmitters (e.g. mobile phones, Notebooks, etc.).
- To protect the cupholder housing, and thus the key stored therein, from interference from the main wiring harness, a shield - part number, 955 552 105 00 must be affixed to the back of the cupholder housing. The procedure for installing the shield is described below in Step 3.1.
Introduction:
As of the following introduction date, April 16, 2003, vehicles will be fitted with the shield starting with Vehicle Identification Numbers:
9P 74L A6 4145 Cayenne S/USA
9P 04L A9 0695 Cayenne Turbo/USA
3.1 Stick shield to the underside of the cupholder housing.
3.1.1 Remove cover for center console, see Cayenne Technical Manual, Group 6, Repairs, Chapter 68-5.1 - Removing and installing cover for center console.
3.1.2 To avoid damage, e.g. scratches, set the cover of the center console down on a soft surface.
3.1.3 Use solvent naphtha to clean the underside of the cupholder to which you want to stick the shield. It must be clean, dry and free of grease.
3.1.4 Pull the protective film off the adhesive strip on the inside of the shield (Figure 1).
3.1.5 Stick the shield to the underside of the cupholder as shown in Figure 2 (arrow points to short leg of shield).
3.1.6 Carefully press on the shield.
3.1.7 Install cover for center console, see Cayenne Technical Manual, Group 6, Repairs, Chapter 68-5.1 - Removing and installing cover for center console.
4. Immobilizer/Kessy control unit cannot be coded.
4.1 Cause 1: The use of an older software version on the PST2 prevents coding of the equipment versions "immobilizer" or immobilizer/Kessy".
Remedy: Re-code the control unit using PST2 software version 16.0 or higher and follow the instructions on the Tester.
Note:
If coding with the PST2 is not possible, continue with step 4.2.
4.2 Cause 2: A version of the immobilizer/Kessy control unit is installed that cannot be re-coded to the equipment features of the vehicle.
Remedy: Replace and code the immobilizer/Kessy control unit.
Note:
After the control unit is replaced, it might no longer be possible to switch on the ignition. In this case, the control unit can be programmed in the PST2 menu "Special functions" "Kessy Cayenne" even without switching on the ignition. For this purpose, the vehicle electrical system/CAN bus must be activated by pressing the foot brake lightly several times in order to establish communication with the PST2. The foot brake must be pressed a number of times until communication has been established with the PST2. Then follow the instructions on the Tester.
