Main Headlights:
Lens Misting Up On Inside

Vehicle Type:
Cayenne/Cayenne S/Cayenne Turbo

Model Year:
As of '03 (3)

Concerns:
Main headlights lens misting up/dampness on inside.

Information:
On Cayenne (V6), Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo vehicles, the cover lens of the main headlights can mist up on the inside. The reason for this is that when the headlights lens cools down after being on, condensations in the form of misting/dampness appears on the inside of the lens.

The remedy for this problem is to exchange the desiccant bag in the main headlight and. depending on the type of lid, to replace the lid once. The new desiccant bag will absorb the residual moisture in the main headlight and prevent the headlight lens from fogging up.

The main headlight must be air tight in order for the desiccant bag to work properly. It is therefore necessary to check the seals and lid of the main headlight for a proper fit and for signs of damage if the headlight lens mists up again. Checking the seals and lid on the main headlight, see step 3. The condensed water does not cause any permanent damage to the main headlights. Therefore, do not replace headlights that have misted up.

Parts Information:

Work Procedure:

1. Handling the desiccant bags.

The desiccant bag is filled with a granulate that starts to absorb moisture immediately after the transport packaging is opened if the ambient conditions are right. For this reason, the following procedure applies:

1.1 Storage of desiccant bags.

Two desiccant bags are delivered in an air-tight package. If a single desiccant bag is taken out of the package, the package must be immediately re-closed and all air removed and sealed with an rubber band or adhesive tape.

1.2 Replacing and inserting the desiccant bags.

The desiccant bag must not be removed from its packaging and placed in the main headlight until just before the main headlight is installed in the vehicle.

Reason:
The main headlight is not sealed air tight until it has been installed in the vehicle and locked, thus sealing the disconnection point of the compact connector air tight

1.3 Storage of removed headlights (e.g. when the vehicle is at the workshop)

In this case, the desiccant bag must be removed from the main headlight and stored in an airtight plastic bag. If the desiccant bag is fastened in the lid of the main headlight with double-sided adhesive tape, the entire main-headlight lid must be removed and packaged in a air tight plastic bag.
Reason: Moisture can enter the main headlight through the open disconnection point of the compact connector on the main headlight, and the desiccant bag can absorb moisture.

1.4 For a bulb change.

Do not remove the main headlight until the new bulb has been received from the parts department and ready for immediate installation. This will ensure that the main headlight is open for the shortest possible time.

1.5 Disposal of desiccant bags.

Unused or damaged desiccant bags can be disposed of with normal domestic waste.

2. Removing and installing the desiccant bag in the main headlight.

2.1 Remove main headlight. Refer to Cayenne Technical Manual, Group 9, Repairs, 94-3 Removing and installing main headlights.

2.2 Open both clips in the direction indicated by the arrows (Figure 1, Item 1).

2.3 Remove the lid of the main headlight (Figure 1, Item 2) from the main headlight in the direction indicated by the arrow.

2.4 If the desiccant bag is taped into the lid (Figure 2), the lid must be replaced with a lid with a holding cage. The desiccant bag must also be replaced. The new type of lid has also been optimized In the area of the seal.

2.5 Remove the old desiccant bag from the holding cage. Hold the lid with the cage opening facing down (Figure 3) to facilitate removal of the desiccant bag.

2.6 Remove the new desiccant bag from its packaging and place it into the holding cage (Figure 4).

2.7 The desiccant bag must be pushed far enough into the holding cage so that it will not be trapped between the sealing surfaces when the lid is installed (Figure 5).

2.8 Position the lid (Figure 6, Item 2) on the main headlight in the direction indicated by the arrow (Figure 6).

2.9 Push both clips (Figure 6, Item 1) over the main headlight lid until they engage into the recesses provided.

2.10 Install main headlight. Refer to Cayenne Technical Manual, Group 9, Repairs, 94-3 - Removing and installing main headlights.

3. Checking the seals and lid on the main headlight inspection points.

4. Concluding work

After completion of the work, it is necessary to perform a function test on the main headlights. All light functions and the function of the headlight beam adjustment system must be checked, refer to Cayenne Technical Manual, Group 0, Repairs: 03-9.1 - Checking the function of the vehicles lights
