Notes on Repair Instructions

Notes on repair instructions - GT3

General

The 911 Carrera (996) is also the basic model for the 911 GT3 covered by the repair, assembly and adjustment operations of the 911 Carrera (996). Only the GT3-specific procedures which deviate from this are additionally described here.

Tightening torques

The majority of the tightening torques for the 911 Carrera (996) and 911 GT3 are the same. Deviating or additional tightening torques are contained in the tables for the 911 Carrera (996).

Adjustment operations on the spring struts

Front axle

1 - Lock nut

2 - Height-adjusting nut

3 - Lock nut

4 - Stabilizer block

The front and rear axle spring strut has a thread and a height-adjusting nut -2- for height adjustment. The height-adjusting nut -2- is secured against turning by the lock nut -1-. The stabilizer block (mounting saddle for the stabilizer mount) -4- is also fitted on the thread. The stabilizer block can be vertically adjusted and it is provided with a lock nut -3-. This adjustment possibility is only useful for racing. It can be used to ensure that enough clearance is available for the stabilizer mount even for deviating vehicle heights (only for racing) and also that the stabilizer mount can be fitted free of tension. The stabilizer block -4- does not need to be adjusted for the vehicle height prescribed for street use. The stabilizer block is also adjusted for replacement dampers.

Rear axle

1 - Lock nut

2 - Height-adjusting nut

3 - Lock nut

4 - Stabilizer block

Information
^ The special tool 9647 is required together with a torque wrench in order to adjust the vehicle height. Description under 911 GT3 suspension alignment.
^ The stabilizer block is also adjusted for replacement dampers.

Suspension alignment

The adjustment procedures and values on the front and rear axle differ in a number of respects from those of the 911 Carrera (996).

The suspension alignment of the 911 GT3 is described after the suspension alignment of the 911 Carrera (996).

Wheel removal/installation

Wheel fastening

The length of the wheel bolts of the GT3 - as of model year 2004 and GT3 RS are the same as that of the wheel bolts of the Carrera (996). In the GT3 - up to model year 2003, the wheel bolts are 5 mm longer.

Wheel bolts

A - Standard wheel bolt (Carrera, GT3 RS and GT3 - as of model year 2004). Dimension X approx. 45 mm.

B - wheel bolt GT3 - up to model year 2003. Dimension X approx. 50 mm. Designation with GT or red color (arrow).

Vehicles with PCCB

In vehicles equipped with the option PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake), use assembly aids (assembly pins) for wheel removal/installation, in order to exclude any possibility of heavy contact of the wheel with the brake disc!

The assembly aids (2 assembly pins) are located in the luggage compartment.

Screw the 2 assembly aids (assembly pins), instead of 2 wheel bolts, into the wheel hub. During removal, first remove the 3 remaining wheel bolts and remove the wheel carefully, without touching the brake discs.

Brake - General

Bleeding and brake fluid change is the same as for 911 Carrera (996).

The fastening screws on the front axle brake calipers and the rear axle calipers are longer than those on the 911 Carrera (996) due to the fact that the brake disc diameter is greater. In addition, please observe the spare parts classification!

911 GT3 - up to model year 2003

Cast iron brake discs with red 4-piston brake calipers on front and rear axle.

3-channel ABS (ABS 5.3) without PSM and without TC (Traction Control).

911 GT3 - as of model year 2004 and 911 GT3 IRS

Equipped as standard with cast iron brake discs. The brake calipers, 6-piston on the front axle and 4-piston on the rear axle, are painted red.

Option: PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake). The brake calipers, 6-piston on the front axle and 4-piston on the rear axle, are painted yellow.

4-channel ABS (ABS 5.7) without PSM and without TC (Traction Control).

Brake booster

When replacing the brake booster, observe the correct allocation. Altered transmission ratio (boost factor) compared to the 911 Carrera (996).

Boost factor 911 GT3 = 3.15: 1. Boost ratio 911 Carrera (996) = 3.85: 1.
