Grinding Noises in The Vicinity Of the Airbag Contact Unit When Turning The Steering Wheel

Steering wheel grinding noises when turning the wheel.
Information:
The rubber tube on the centering pegs of the airbag contact unit may be pressed together and causing the grinding noise when the steering wheel is turned. Applying grease to the rubber tubes on the centering pegs of the airbag contact unit will solve this complaint.

Danger of injury and risk of property damage if the airbag unit is handled improperly!
> Remove ignition key. Disconnect and cover the ground terminal.
> The airbag may accidentally be triggered during assembly work if the condenser is charged.
> Begin further work on the vehicle only after waiting 1 minute (=capacitor discharging time).
Work Procedure:
Remedying the grinding noise caused when turning the steering wheel.
1. Raise the vehicle on a vehicle hoist until the front wheels are slightly off the ground.
2. Remove the driver's side airbag as described in the Technical Manual, Group 3, Chapter 69 58 19.
3. Remove the steering wheel as described in the Technical Manual, Group 4, Chapter 48 10 19.
4. Pull and smoothen rubber tubes on the centering pegs of the airbag contact unit (Figure 1. Item A).
Note:
Ensure that there are no bulges on the rubber tubes.
5. Grease the the rubber tubes (Figure 1 Item A) with grease Part No. 000 043 205 83.
6. Install the steering wheel in straight ahead position and tighten it with a torque of 50 Nm (37 ft-lb.).
Note:
Use new multiple-tooth screw, Part No. N 910 207 01.
7. Install driver's side airbag.
8. Remove the vehicle from the hoist.
