Removing and installing steering column
Caution! Observe safety regulations for handling airbag modules.
Danger of injury and damage to property as a result of incorrect handling of airbag units.
Note!
^ The fore-and-aft adjustment must be brought to the completely extended position for the electrically adjustable steering column. The vertical adjustment must be moved to the centre position. This will improve accessibility to the fastening screws on the mounting bracket.
Removal
1. Disconnect battery.
2. Remove lower cover in footwell and cover for lower instrument panel.
3. Remove driver's airbag unit. To do this, turn the steering wheel 90° from the centre position. Press on retaining clip with a screwdriver. Turn the steering wheel 180° and repeat the procedure. Unclip airbag unit.
4. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and remove.
5. Take off cover of steering column switch and remove steering column switch.
6. Remove the heat shield on steering gear
7. Release cross joint on steering gear .
8. Remove main catalytic converter and heat shield.
9. Remove starter catalyst.
10. Remove the fastening nuts for installing the sealing bellows on the bulkhead (one fastening nut hidden).
11. Remove both fastening screws on the holder for the brake light switch.
12. Disconnect electric plug connections.
13. Remove the fastening screw on the mounting bracket (mount of upper universal joint) .
14. Remove -fastening screws (1-4)- on the mounting bracket and extend the complete steering column.
Installation
Note!
^ Observe the tightening sequence on the mounting bracket.
^ Once the battery is disconnected, perform the relevant work required to fully restore driving
^ Calibrate steering angle sensor.
^ The electronic steering column lock (ELV) must be taught using the Porsche System Tester by selecting the menu items >> Messy >> Learning functions >> Teach ELV <<. You can get the necessary immobiliser code from IPAS or from your importer by specifying the vehicle identification number.
^ The electrically adjustable steering column must be adapted in the vehicle.
^ Always replace the fastening screw for the universal joint of the steering column.
^ Replace locking screws and nuts.
^ Visually inspect all parts.
^ Use correct tightening torques.
^ The steering column must only be replaced as a complete unit. Individual components cannot be disassembled and replaced.
1. Insert the steering column and the -fastening screws- in the order indicated -1, 2, 3, 4- on the assembly cross member.
2. Attach the fastening screw to the mounting bracket (mount of upper universal joint), cardanic, free of warping (can be moved in every direction).
3. Slide the steering shaft (universal joint) to correct position, steering gear in centre position, as far as it will go. When fitted correctly and tension-free, the universal joint must be at a maximum -distance (arrows)- of 4 mm from the outermost edge of the steering transmission dust bellows.
4. Attach heat shield and starter catalyst.
5. Fit main catalytic converter.
6. Fit steering column switch.
7. Fit the steering wheel.
8. Install airbag unit.
9. Fit holder for brake light switch and the covers.
10. Connect battery.
