Removing and installing rear final drive








Tools

Removing final drive
1. Remove exhaust system.
2. Move selector lever to position N.





3. Loosen fastening screws for fixing cardan shaft centre bearing holder to body.





4. Loosen bolts for fixing centre bearing to holder.





Note:
^ The colour mark, match point, on the cardan shaft and on the rear final drive flange must be aligned. This will neutralize any residual imbalance of the components.





5. Remove cardan shaft from rear axle transmission and tie it up.





6. Remove both drive shafts on transmission side and tie up.
7. Support transmission jack and rear axle transmission with retaining band.





8. Unscrew fastening screws on transmission. Counter with ring wrench.





9. Tip drive flange upwards and drain rear axle transmission. Remove bleeder line at the same time.

10. Remove transmission.

Installing final drive
1. Secure rear axle transmission on transmission jack with retainer band.





2. Run in rear axle transmission by gradually tipping the drive flange upwards. Position bleeder line at the same time.





Fitting bleeder line

Note: Screws which are tightened with a torque angle must be replaced with new ones.





3. Replace fastening screws on the axle transmission and tighten. Counter with ring wrench.
Tightening torque: 90 Nm (67 ft. lbs.) + 90° torque angle
4. Attach drive shafts with new screws.
Tightening torque: 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) + 90° torque angle

Caution:
Buzzing and droning noises in the cardan shaft due to imbalance.
^ Cardan shaft and flange not installed in original position
^ The colour mark, match point, on the cardan shaft and on the rear final drive flange must be aligned. This neutralizes any residual imbalance of the components.

Note: Screws which are tightened with a torque angle must be replaced with new ones.





5. Attach cardan shaft with new screws.
Tightening torque: 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) + 90° torque angle





6. Screw in fastening screws for fixing cardan shaft centre bearing holder to body.
Tightening torque: 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.)

Note:
^ Centre bearing must be installed without tension.





^ Fit special tool centering tool 9680 -tool in installation position- in the specified sequence.





^ Mount special tool centering tool 9680 .





^ Press special tool centering tool 9680 in sequence according to numbering -1, 2- .





7. Tighten bolt connecting holder to centre bearing.
Tightening torque: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)





8. Remove special tool centering tool 9680 .
9. Install exhaust system.
