Engine Controls - 'Low Oil Pressure' Message
911 (997)3/05 ENU 1704
Date: Dec. 15, 2005
Warning Message "Oil Pressure Too Low" In Display Of On-Board Computer
Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (997)/911 Carrera S (997)
Model Year:
2005
This Relates To:
Warning message "oil pressure too low" in display of on-board computer
Situation:
Electric shunts in the electric plug connection of the oil pressure sender.
Salt water penetrating the electric plug connection on the warning contact of the oil pressure sender can lead to electric shunts and thereby can cause the warning message "oil pressure too low" to be displayed in the display of the on-board computer, although the engine-oil level and oil pressure are correct.
As of the following date of introduction, the electrical lead to the warning contact of the oil pressure sender is sealed with an additional grommet.
Date Of Introduction:
September, 15 2004, as of the engine numbers shown.
Action Required:
If the warning message "Oil pressure too low" is displayed on vehicles produced before the date of introduction, even though the engine-oil level and oil pressure are correct, the electric plug connection of the oil pressure sender must be checked for traces of corrosion.
If there are traces of corrosion visible in the electric plug connection of the oil pressure sender, the installed oil pressure sender must be replaced and a new oil pressure sender wire harness is to be installed.
Parts Info:
Tools:
Side cutters
Press-out and unlocking tools for flat and round plug connections of every size NR. 155
Electrical tape (commercially available)
WARNING
Burns caused by touching hot engine parts.
^ Parts of the engine can be extremely hot.
-->Only work when the engine has cooled down.
Work Procedure:
1. Open engine compartment lid.
2. On the oil pressure sender in the engine compartment on the right behind the flat receptacles (--> Figure 7-Item A-) pull off oil pressure sender from the flat lugs on the oil pressure sender (--> Figure 1-Item B-).
3. Cut off the installed oil pressure sender wire harness approx. 10-20 mm after the outlet from the engine wire harness with side cutters (-->Figure 1).
4. Dispose of the separated end of the wire harness and secure the other end of the wire harness with electrical tape to the engine wire harness.
5. Replace the oil pressure sender, --> Workshop Manual "170479 Removing and installing sender for oil pressure indicator".
6. In the right side of the engine compartment, loosen the lower round connector (-->Figure 2-Item A-) of the engine wire harness on the connection point TSX59-2 (grey marking) and push the plastic cover (-->Figure 2-Item B-) to the rear.
7. Twist the grey circlip in the round connector (-->Figure 3-Item A-) to the right to release the plug-in contacts.
8. Using the press-out tool 87050 (--> Figure 3-Item B-) from the Porsche set No. 155, press out the following plug-in contacts of the previous oil pressure sender wire harness from the round connector:
- Pin 16: green/red lead
- Pin 17: green/white lead
9. Using the side cutters, cut off both wires with the pressed out plug-in contacts as close as possible to the outlet from the engine wire harness.
10. Dispose of cut off wires.
11. Install new oil pressure sender wire harness.
11.1 Insert plug-in contacts of the new oil pressure sender wire harness, part No. --> 997.607.903.00, in the round connector:
- green/red lead: Pin 16
- green/white lead: Pin 17
11.2 Twist the grey circlip in the round connector (--> Figure 3-Item A-) to the left to lock the plug-in contacts.
11.3 Position the round connector on the connection point TSX59-2 in the engine compartment on the right and screw down.
11.4 Guide the oil pressure sender wire harness out of the protection cap of the round connector and push the protection cap on the round connector (--> Figure 4).
11.5 Route the oil pressure sender wire harness (--> Figure 4-Item A-) along the engine wire harness (~Figure 4-Item B-) up to the oil pressure sender and fasten with the delivered tie-wraps (--> Figure 4-Item C-) to the engine wire harness.
In the area of the wiring duct, attach each tie-wrap to the positions of the existing tie-wraps (--> Figure 4-Item D-).
11.6 Push the flat receptacles of the oil pressure sender wire harness onto the flat lugs on the oil pressure sender.
