Check Engine Warning Light Activated in Instrument Cluster: Fault Codes P0300 to P0306 in the DME Fault Memory.

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (997)/911 Carrera S (997)

Model Year:
As of 2005 up to 2006 Concerns:

Concerns:
DME control unit

Situation:
- Check Engine warning light activated in instrument cluster.
- Fault codes P0300 to P0306 in the DME fault memory.
- However, no noticeable engine problems.

If one of the following fault codes is issued when carrying out repairs on a vehicle for which the customer complaint "Check Engine warning light activated" was reported:

Fault code Fault memory

P0300: Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0301: Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
P0302: Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
P0303: Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
P0304: Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
P0305: Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected
P0306: Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected

always proceed as described below:

Tools:
PIWIS Tester 9718 with PIWIS software version 16.0 or higher.

Action:
Use the PIWIS Tester to read out the extended fault memory:

Required:
If the fault type "above limit value" or "below limit value"is issued,
--> perform "Guided Fault Finding".

If the fault type "implausible signal" is issued,
--> re-program the DME control unit using the PIWIS Tester.

Work:
Using the PIWIS Tester:

Procedure:
1 In the DME control unit -> 'Fault memory' -> select any reported fault codes between P0300 and P0306 one after the other and -> press - F12 " in each case to call up the extended fault memory - if fault type "implausible signal" is issued:

ATTENTION
DME control unit programming must not be interrupted.
- If programming is interrupted due to a voltage drop, malfunctions in the DME control unit or damage to the DME control unit cannot be ruled out.
--> Connect the vehicle battery to a suitable charger.

2 Activate DME control unit -> 'Control unit programming' using the PIWIS Tester (PIWIS software version 16.0 or higher).

3 To ensure that misfire detection is fully activated again following programming, the DME control unit must re-adapt the engine-speed sensor wheel.

To do this, a test drive must be performed as soon as programming is complete during which the engine must be under load between 2000 and 3000 rpms for at least 30 seconds (even with interruptions).

4 Allow the engine to cool down until the engine temperature is less than 86 degree F (30 degree C).

5 Start the engine and let it run at idle speed for 3 minutes. Switch off the engine.

6 Read out the fault memory using the PIWIS Tester:
- If misfire faults are detected again (P0300 to P0306)
--> perform "Guided Fault Finding".

7 Once you have corrected all faults, erase the fault memory.
