Door Pocket - Noises When Opening and Closing Lid

Date: 4-15-05

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (997)/911 Carrera S (997)

Model Year:
2005

Concerns:
Rattling noises when opening and closing the lid for the door pocket.

Information:
When opening and closing the door pocket lid, rattling noises can occur on the gear wheels of the guide mechanism of the lid. The cause is insufficient bracing of the mounting for the lid hinge which can result in the gear wheel on the damper of the lid hinge jumping over individual teeth of the toothed segment on the lid under unfavorable tolerance conditions.

To prevent the gear wheel from jumping over, the spacer is designed with additional securing rib on the mounting of the lid hinge as of the date of introduction listed below. Only modified spacers with additional securing rib will be delivered through the parts department.

On vehicles produced before the stated introduction dates, the spacer on the mounting of the lid hinge and the damper of the lid hinge must be replaced whenever there is a customer complaint. Additionally, the toothed segment on the lid must be visually inspected. If the teeth of the toothed segment are visibly damaged, the lid of the door pocket must also be replaced.

Date of Introduction: March 21, 2005, as of the VINs:

Parts Information:

Tools:
Screwdriver (small)

Materials:
Fast drying adhesive, e.g., Loctite 414

Work Procedure:

1. Remove door trim panel. See Workshop Manual 705919 - Removing and installing door trim panel.

Attention!

The door trim panel may be damaged if stored incorrectly.

> During work, place door trim panel with the inside facing upwards on a clean, soft surface.

2. On the door trim panel bracket (See Figure 1, Item 1) remove the spacer (Figure 1, Item 2) on the mounting of the lid hinge.

2.1 Insert a small screwdriver between the spacer and the latches on the mounting (See Figure 1, Items A) and unclip the spacer upwards out of the locks.

2.2 Take off the spacer and dispose of it.

3. Remove damper (See Figure 2, Item 1) of the lid hinge from the mounting (Figure 2, Item 2).

3.1 Press in the lugs (See Figure 2, Item A) on the damper with a small screwdriver.

3.2 Pull out the damper (See Figure 2, Item 1) towards the front (Figure 2, arrow) out of the mounting (Figure 2, Item 2).

4. Check toothed segment on lid (See Figure 2, Item 3) for damage:

> Teeth of toothed segment do not show damage?

Continue with Step 5.

> Teeth of toothed segment are damaged?

Replace lid for door pocket, see Workshop Manual 706519 Removing and installing cover for oddments tray. When installing the cover, use a new damper, then continue with Step 6.

5. Clip in a new damper in the mounting until the lugs of the damper lock with an audible click in the lid.

6. Install modified spacer. The modified spacer (See Figure 3) can be identified by the additional securing rib (Figure 3, Item 1).

6.1 Insert the spacer (See Figure 4, Item 1) first into the rear latches of the mounting (Figure 4, Items A).

6.2 Then clip the spacer towards the front (See Figure 4, arrow) into the front latches of the mounting (Figure 4, Items B).

7. Between the housing of the damper (See Figure 5, item 1) and the mounting (Figure 5, Item 2) apply (Figure 5, Items A) some fast-drying adhesive (e.g. Loctite 414) on three points to secure the damper in its installation position on the mounting.

8. Install door trim panel.
