Concern:
Threaded joint of airbag mounting plate to steering wheel may need to be tightened.
Information:
This is to inform you of a voluntary Workshop Service Action on a certain range of 2005 model year 911 Carrera (997) and 911 Carrera S (997) vehicles. There is a possibility that steering wheels were installed in vehicles on which the threaded joint of the airbag mounting plate was not tightened to the prescribed torque.
Action Required:
Tighten threaded joint of airbag mounting plate to steering wheel at prescribed tightening torque.
Affected vehicles:
A total of 1,209 U.S. and 45 Canadian vehicles fall within the scope of this Workshop Service Action.

Work Procedure:
Scope 1
Danger!
Strictly observe safety precautions as outlined in the referenced Workshop Manual!
1. Disconnect the ground terminal of battery. > Workshop Manual 270619 Removing and installing battery - chapter on "Removing" provides information on disconnection.
2. Remove airbag unit on driver's side according to > Workshop Manual 695819 Removing and installing airbag unit for driver - chapter on "Removing".
Note!
Observe here also the chapter Safety regulations when handling airbag and seat-belt tensioner units according to > Workshop Manual 691000 Safety regulations for airbag and belt tensioner unit.
3. Use a torque wrench to tighten the four fastening screws for the airbag mounting plate to steering wheel, see Figure 1 - Item A - with a tightening torque of 5.0 Nm (3.5 ftlb.{0.5 Nm (-0.5 ftlb.).
- If the tightening torque of 5.0 Nm (3.5 ftlb.)-0.5 Nm (-0.5 ftlb.) can be applied to all four fastening screws; continue with Step 5.
- If the tightening torque of 5.0 Nm (3.5 ftlb.)-0.5 Nm (-0.5 ftlb.) cannot be applied, the fastening screw was already tightened in the production process at a higher tightening torque than was specified. The thread is damaged, continue with Step 4.
Scope 2 (Note: Most vehicles will require Scope 1 work procedure)
4. Remove steering wheel according to > Workshop Manual 481019 Removing and installing steering wheel and install new steering wheel.
5. Install airbag unit for driver's side according to > Workshop Manual 695819 Removing and installing airbag unit for driver - chapter on "Installing".
6. Connect ground terminal of battery according to > Workshop Manual 270619 Removing and installing battery - chapter on "Installing".
7. Carry out work instruction after disconnecting the battery according to > Workshop Manual "27061N Work instructions after disconnecting the batter".
8. Enter the Workshop Service Action into the Warranty and Maintenance booklet.
