Whistling Noise In The A-Pillar Area At High Speed
Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (997)/911 Carrera S (997)
Model Year:
2005 (5)
Concern:
Whistling noise at high vehicle speeds by the windshield sealing profile and body.
Information:
The whistling noise in area of the upper A-pillar and/or in windshield radius on the driver's and/or passenger's side are created by the tolerances between body and windshield which lead to a reduction of contact force of the sealing profile.
At the above-mentioned speed, the lip of the sealing profile lifts up and creates a whistling noise in the area of the upper A-pillar and/or in the windshield radius.
Affected Vehicles:
Measure:
In the event of complaints, adhere the lip of the sealing profile with windshield sealing tape (butyl tape) in the area of the upper A-pillar and to the body on both sides of the vehicle in the windshield radius. Refer to page 2 for work procedure.
Parts Information:
Tools:
Clean cloth
Cleaning fluid (windshield cleaner, mineral spirits, etc.)
Tape measure
Knife/scissors
Adhesive tape
Work Procedure:
Adhere the windshield sealing profile to the body with sealing tape. Here the pieces of sealing tape are adhered on each side of the vehicle in the area of the upper A-pillar and in the gap between the windshield and body under the sealing profile in the windshield radius.
1. Preparatory work.
1.1 Mark the beginning and end of the area where the sealing tape should be applied on the windshield, on the driver's side and on the passenger's side, using a tape measure and 2 pieces of adhesive tape each (Figure 1, dimensions 20 cm and 35 cm).
1.2 Clean the area of the gap under the sealing profile between windshield and body and sealing profile using a cleaning fluid (e.g., windshield cleaner, mineralspirits, etc.) (Figure 2, arrow).
Caution!
The sealing tape has no adhering or bonding effect on damp surfaces!
> Ensure that the cleaned surfaces on the body and sealing profile are dry before mounting the sealing tape.
2. Working with the sealing tape.
2.1 Cut off 20 pieces of the sealing tape, each about 1.5 cm long (from sealing set 477.898.011.A, diameter 1 cm).
Note:
The best way to install the sealing tape is in individual pieces.
2.2 Shape the sealing tape pieces into pieces of rope.
3. Work on the sealing profile.
3.1 Pull back the sealing profile using your fingers, beginning at one of the adhesive tape markings, insert a sealing tape piece into the gap between the windshield and body (Figure 3).
3.2 Distribute the sealing tape by pressing uniformly it in the gap (Figure 4).
3.3 Press the sealing profile on the sealing tape and smooth it out. Make sure that the surface (appearance) of the sealing profile does not have any waves or irregular bumps.
Note:
Remove any excess sealing tape by pressing against it with another piece of sealing tape.
3.4 Add a new piece of sealing tape next to the previous piece of sealing tape in the gap and work on it as described in Steps 3.i to 3.3. Work in the sealing tape pieces in the gap up to the end of the marked area (a total of approximately 10 pieces will be necessary).
3.5 Work on the other side as is described in Steps 3.1 to 3.4.
