Airbag Warning Light Activated:

Seal in the Plug Connection of Triggering Unit Faulty

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (997)/911 Carrera S (997)

Model Year:
2005 (5)

Concerns:
Seal in plug connection of POSIP triggering unit (Porsche Side Impact Protection System) faulty.

- Diagnostic trouble code(s) in fault memory of POSIP triggering unit.

Information:
A faulty seal in the wire harness connector for the POSIP triggering unit can lead to contact problems in the plug connection, because the plug connection does not engage completely, the short circuit bridges integrated in the connector of the affected pin does not disconnect.

In the instrument cluster, the airbag warning light is activated and the diagnostic trouble code:

8033 - Passenger head airbag and/or the diagnostic trouble code

8034 - Passenger thorax airbag, together with the fault type "Below limit value" is stored in the fault memory of the triggering unit.

If this fault type occurs on vehicles produced before the date of introduction (for the modified seal) listed below, the seal in the connector as well as the connector housing must be replaced.

Introduction:

June 29, 2004, as of the following VINs:
99 X5S 71 5197 911 Carrera
99 15S 74 0194 911 Carrera S

Work Procedure:

Requirement - In the fault memory of the POSIP triggering unit, the diagnostic trouble code 8033 and/or the diagnostic trouble code 8034 is stored with the fault type "Below limit value".

1. On the driver and passenger side, remove the cover for the center console, see 911 Carrera (997) Workshop Manual, Group 6, 68 14 19 - Removing and installing cover for center console. Figure 1 shows the installation location of the triggering unit.

Note:
The description from the Workshop Manual is included as an attachment to this Technical Information.

2. Remove the shift-lever knob or Tiptronic selector knob, see 911 Carrera (997) Workshop Manual, Group 3, 34 04 19 - Removing and installing shift-lever knob or 37 04 19 - Removing and installing selector knob.

3. Remove the cover for the center console, see 911 Carrera (997) Workshop Manual, Group 6, 68 19 19 - Removing and installing cover for the center console.

Note:
The description from the Workshop Manual is included as an enclosure to this Technical Information.

4. Remove the shelf in the center console, see 911 Carrera (997) Workshop Manual, Group 6, 68 16 19 - Removing and installing the shelf.

Note:
The description from the Workshop Manual is included as an attachment to this Technical Information.

5. Remove switch console above the shelf.

Note:
The switch console is clipped into the center console.

5.1 Lift out the switch console with a screwdriver from the mounting in the center console and pull out (Figure 2).

5.2 Release the electric connector on the switch console and pull off from the switch console.

Warning!
Injuries and material damage due to faulty triggering of the airbag module.
> Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
> Disconnect battery and route or insulate ground strap so that contact with a ground carrier (e.g. with the body) is avoided.
> After disconnecting the battery, observe 1 minute waiting time.
> Pull off connector from triggering unit after 1 minute waiting time has past.

6. From the passenger's side, open the latching lever (Figure 3, Item A) of the connector on the triggering unit and release the connector.

7. Disconnect the plug from the triggering unit.

8. Replace connector housing.

Note:
Due to faulty seal in the connector, greater force must be applied the first time the plug connection is engaged. Because of this, the connector housing can be damaged around the latching lever and must be replaced.

8.1 Cut through the tie-wrap for securing the harness on the connector housing (Figure 4, inset) and remove.

8.2 Use a small screwdriver or a wire to engage the guide on the connector housing (Figure 5).

8.3 Swivel the screwdriver or the wire downward and lift the connector housing upward from the connector (Figure 5, inset). Pull off connector housing from the connector toward the front over the lugs.

8.3.1 Push new connector housing onto the connector until it locks with an audible click.

8.3.2 Apply tie-wrap to secure the connector housing to the harness (Figure 4).

9. Replacing the seal in the connector.

9.1 Lift connector guide with your fingernail (Figure 6, inset) and pull off from connector over the lugs in the direction of arrow.

9.2 Lever out the seal from the connector with a small screw driver or a wire (Figure 7).

9.3 Insert a new seal in the connector and press downward with your fingernail until the stop.

9.4 Push connector guide onto the connector until it locks with an audible click.

10. Make a red mark with a waterproof pen on the top of the connector and on the top of the triggering unit at position A (Figure 8) to mark that the faulty seal has been replaced.

11. Insert the connector completely into the socket on the triggering unit and lock the latching lever (Figure 8).

12. Install switch console.

13. Install shelf in center console.

14. Install the cover of the center console.

15. Install shift-lever knob or Tiptronic selector knob.

16. Install cover for the center console on the driver's and passenger's side.

17. Connect the battery.
