Charging Battery While Vehicle Is In Shop and During Diagnosis With PIWIS

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (997)/911 Carrera S (997)

Model Year:
As of 2005

Concern:
Charging Battery While Vehicle Is In Shop and During Diagnosis With PIWIS to prevent:

- battery discharge,
- fault entry in fault memory due to undervoltage.

Information:
In order to prevent the battery from discharging and/or to improve the battery charge status, a suitable battery charger must be connected to the vehicle battery at any time that the vehicle is present in the workshop and work is being performed on the vehicle for longer than 15 minutes.

Due to the interconnection of the electronic systems in the vehicle through several bus systems, there is an increased current consumption which heavily discharges the battery when the engine is not running. Therefore, a suitable battery charger must be connected to the vehicle battery especially when the following vehicle conditions apply or the following work is being performed:

- ignition on (terminal 15),
- doors and/or lids open,
- information system in use,
- adjusting/checking lighting system,
- activation of additional electric consumers,
- vehicle diagnosis.

During control module programming, a suitable battery charger must always be connected to the vehicle battery as the increased current consumption can otherwise lead to a voltage drop which can result in one or more faults being entered in the fault memory or cancellation of the control module programming.

Note!
When performing current or voltage measurements using the PIWIS Tester or another test or measurement device (e.g. an oscilloscope), the battery charger needs to be disconnected from the vehicle battery for the duration of the measurements in order to prevent incorrect measurements.

Recommendation:

Porsche recommends using the battery quick-starter charger Snap-On YA 1222 or equivalent. If you are using the battery charger of a different manufacturer, it should supply a charge current of at least 30 A and be "vehicle electrical system-friendly", i.e. it must be possible to connect it while the battery is hooked up to the vehicle electrical system (observe operating manual of employed battery charger).
