Work Procedure

1. Preparatory work.

1.1 Remove cowl panel molding cover (Technical Manual, Group 7, Part ID. 7022).

1.2 Disconnect and remove the battery.

1.3 Remove right front seat (Part ID. 7201), trims of center console (Part ID. 6817), cover under glove compartment (Part ID. 6815), car radio (Part ID. 9124) and instrument cluster (Part ID. 9025).

1.4 Remove right sill (Part ID. 6805), right side panel lining (Part ID. 7075) and right wiring duct in entry area.

2. Install telephone antenna.





2.1 Insert sheet metal nuts (A) in the cover for cowl panel.

2.2 Clip in the telephone antenna in the cowl panel cover (arrows) and fasten with screws (B).

2.5 Connect antenna lead with extension lead (C).

2.4 Bundle antenna lead in wiring arrangement.

2.5 Install cowl panel cover (Part ID. 7022).





2.6 Connect sheet metal nuts (A) for antenna holder to firewall.

2.7 Insert antenna holder (B) and fasten with screws (C).

3. Route antenna lead into the passenger compartment.





3.1 Remove service grommet (A) from the firewall.

3.2 Remove insulating material from service grommet and put a hole into the service grommet.

3.3 Slide service grommet over antenna lead.

Note:
Observe direction of installation for service grommet.

3.4 Pull antenna lead into the passenger compartment and install service grommet.

3.5 Seal the hole on the service grommet (B) with adhesive compound.

3.6 Route and secure antenna lead from the service grommet in the firewall behind the dashboard along to the right center console.

Note:
If the telephone is not installed, the antenna lead remains functionless in the vehicle. Secure antenna lead permanently in rear area of center console.





4. Install electrical wiring harness.

4.1 Bundle the wires of the electrical wiring harness with insulating tape.





4.2 Route and secure electrical wiring harness as follows:
-> right seat baseframe -> right entry,
-> right entry -> glove compartment;
-> below glove compartment
-> radio installation slot -> instrument cluster.

4.3 Fit both ground leads to ground point MP 6 (Figure 6, Item C) under seat baseframe.

4.4 Wrap leads RD/GN, 1.0 sq.; GN/BK 1.0 sq. and YE/BK, 0.35 sq. (4-pin plug connection, center console) with insulating tape and cut to the correct length.

4.5 Crimp new pin contacts (3 x) to the leads while observing the wiring diameters (see Table 4.6).





4.6 Allocate the telephone preparation pin housing (4-pin) with the pin contacts as shown.

4.7 Expose the 4-pin "telephone preparation" plug (in the right center console area - Technical Manual, Group 9, "Radio" and "Telephone/mobile phone" circuit diagrams) in the vehicle and establish plug connection to 4-pin retrofit kit plug.

4.8 Secure plug housing with a tie wrap.
Note:
Do not locate plug in the immediate vicinity of the airbag control module.





4.9 Check "C" socket plug on the electric wiring harness (scope of parts). If necessary, convert and push in contacts.

4.9.1 The green "C2" socket plug (6-pin) is always bound to the electrical wiring harness. This one can only be used for vehicles as of MY'03.

4.9.2 For vehicles of model year '01 - '02, the green "C2" socket plug (6-pin) must be replaced by the blue "C3" socket plug (8-pin).





4.9.3 Allocate socket contacts in the "C" socket plug as follows:

4.10 4-pin plug, complete hands-free microphone from retrofit kit.

Note:
The plug is already installed on vehicles with BOSE sound package.





4.11 Allocate the 4-pin pin housing for hands-free microphone as shown.

5. Install microphone.

5.1 Depending on the interior equipment, convert microphone cover.





5.1.1 Remove retaining clip (A) of the microphone cover.

5.1.2 Pull microphone out of cover.

5.1.3 Insert microphone in cover and secure with retaining clip.

5.2 Remove cover from instrument cluster.

5.3 Guide microphone electrical wiring harness through the opening in the instrument cluster cover.





5.4 Position the instrument cluster cover and tighten with screws (A).

5.5 Route microphone electrical wiring harness on the rear of the instrument cluster. To do this, clip into the holders (B).

5.6 Install cover to instrument cluster.





6. Install telephone bracket (Technical Manual, Group 6, Part ID. 6817).

6.1 Position holder bracket on center console and fasten with screws.

6.2 Clip on telephone bracket to center console and fasten with screws.

6.3 Insert top in telephone bracket and fasten with screws.

6.4 Press cover plug into top.

7. Complete the vehicle.

7.1 Install right sill, right side-panel lining, and right cable duct in sill area.

7.2 Install trims of center console, cover under the glove compartment, and the radio and instrument cluster.

7.3 Install right front seat.
Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48 ft.lb.)

7.4 Install and connect the battery.

7.5 Reprogram radio to hands-free function - see operating instructions of the respective radio (e.g.. for CDR23; "Step 8; user menu - telephone mute behavior").

7.6 After programming is complete, read out the fault memory of all systems, correct any existing faults, and erase the fault memory.

For further information and instruction on carrying out the individual menu items, refer to Technical Manual.

8. Install seat stop.
Note:
To avoid contact of the front seat with the telephone bracket or the mobile phone, a seat stop has been installed in the seat guide rail.

8.1 Move front seat all the way back.

8.2 Only for mechanical front seat:





8.2.1 Position seat stop in accordance with Figure 11, Item A in the seat rail, and clip in.

8.2.2 Carefully drive in locking peg (center seat stop) completely into the seat rail with a hammer and mandrel.

8.3 Only for comfort seat (electrically adjustable):

8.3.1 Position seat stop in the 8th notch behind the existing stop in the seat rail (Item B).

8.3.2 Clip seat stop into the notch.

8.4 Check seat adjustment.
