Vehicle Type:
911 Turbo (996)/911 Turbo S (996)

Model Year:
As of 2001

This Relates To:
Rear spoiler drive.

Situation:
Malfunctions in the rear spoiler drive.

Below you will find information on causes and remedial actions for the following malfunctions in the rear spoiler drive.

^ Warning message "Failure of spoiler control" in the display panel of the on-board computer/fault code 9150 in the instrument cluster fault memory --> see Step 1.

^ Rear spoiler will not extend --> see Step 2.

^ Rear spoiler only extends on one side --> see Step 3.

^ Rear spoiler extends or retracts unevenly --> see Step 4.

Work Procedure:

Complaint

1 Warning message "Failure of spoiler control" in the display panel of the on-board computer/fault code 9150 - "Rear wing control" in the instrument cluster fault memory.

The warning message "Failure of spoiler control" appears if the rear spoiler

- does not extend at a speed of > 75 mph (120 km/h)

- does not retract at a speed of < 38 mph (60 km/h)

- does not reach its end position

Remedial action

1.1 Switch on ignition.

1.2 Extend the rear spoiler manually. To do this, press the rocker switch in the dashboard trim panel, see Owner's Manual, chapter entitled "Controls, Safety, Instruments - Extending rear spoiler". Get a second person to observe the extending action of the rear spoiler.

--> Rear spoiler extends normally, continue with Step 1.3.

--> Rear spoiler will not extend, continue with Step 2.3.

--> Rear spoiler only extends on one side, continue with Step 3.3.

-- Rear spoiler extends or retracts unevenly, continue with Step 4.

1.3 Retract the rear spoiler manually. To do this, press and hold down the rocker switch in the dashboard trim panel until the rear spoiler retracts fully. Observe the rear spoiler as it retracts.

--> Rear spoiler retracts unevenly, continue with Step 4.

--> Rear spoiler retracts normally --> Check the microswitch for monitoring the upper and lower end position of the rear spoiler, see POSES, Diagnosis - 9025 Instrument cluster, fault code 9150 - "Spoiler control."

1.4 Once you have completed the checks or carried out repairs on the rear spoiler drive, perform a function test. To do this, extend and then retract the rear spoiler manually using the rocker switch in the dashboard trim panel.

1.5 Read out the instrument cluster fault memory with the PIWIS Tester and erase it if necessary.

1.6 Extend and retract the rear spoiler manually using the rocker switch, then read out the instrument cluster fault memory again to ensure that no more faults are stored.

--> End of remedial action

4 Rear spoiler extends and/or retracts unevenly.

Remedial action

4.1 Switch on ignition.

4.2 Extend and then retract the rear spoiler manually using the rocker switch in the dashboard trim panel, see Owner's Manual, chapter entitled "Controls, Safety, Instruments - Extending rear spoiler". While doing this, get a second person to observe the extending/retracting action of the rear spoiler.

--> Rear spoiler extends and/or retracts unevenly.

Possible causes of fault:

^ The pipes in the hydraulic cylinders are dirty and as a result, cannot move freely.

^ The rear spoiler drive was installed too tightly.

^ The rear spoiler drive is defective.

4.3 Pipes in the hydraulic cylinders are dirty.

4.3.1 Extend the rear spoiler manually. To do this, press the rocker switch in the dashboard trim panel, see Owner's Manual, chapter entitled "Controls, Safety, Instruments - Extending rear spoiler".

4.3.2 With the rear spoiler extended, clean dirty pipes in the hydraulic cylinders with a suitable cleaning agent (e.g. insect remover), then wash them with a sponge and clean water and dry them off with a cloth.

4.3.3 Check the function of the rear spoiler drive. To do this, extend, retract and then extend the rear spoiler again manually using the rocker switch in the dashboard trim panel.
