Steering Column: Service and Repair

Removing and installing steering column

On the 911 Turbo (996), the steering column version -V2- (vehicles with PSM) is installed, and on the 911 GT2, the version -V1- (vehicles without PSM) is installed.

For the -V2- version (vehicles with PSM), the lower steering shaft can be separated from the upper steering shaft, as there is an (exchangeable) steering-angle sensor -C- located there.

For the -V1- version (vehicles without PSM), the lower steering shaft can also be separated/unscrewed from the upper steering shaft -arrow-.

Information
^ The -V2- version (for vehicles with PSM) is supplied as a spare part ready for installation (complete with steering-angle sensor and lower steering shaft).
^ As of the 2003 model on version -V2- (for 911 Turbo), the steering-angle sensor -C- has been modified (figures shows the old steering-angle sensor). The -V2- steering column is delivered as a spare part with the modified/new steering-angle sensor. In case of replacement, a new cable guide and an adapter line as well must be installed for the new steering-angle sensor up until the 2003 model. This only applies to the first installation of a new steering-angle sensor.
^ The -V1- version is also supplied as a spare part ready for installation (complete with lower steering shaft).

Removing and installing steering column

1. Removing and installing can be found in the 911 Carrera (996) Technical Manual.
2. On the 911 Turbo 996 - prior to the 2003 model - where the steering column is being replaced and the old steering-angle sensor -C1- is still installed, a new cable guide and an adapter line as well must be installed. This is required as the new steering column is supplied with the modified/new steering-angle sensor -C2-.

Installing/converting the new cable guide -B2- (instead of the old cable guide) and an additional adapter line -E- for the new steering-angle sensor -C2-, (in vehicles before model 2003) is described in the following chapter.
