Replacement Engines: Types M96.25 and M96.26

Vehicle Type:
Boxster (987)/Boxster S (987)

Model Year:
2005 (5)

Concerns:
Replacement engine, EP engine of engine types M96.25 and M96.26

- Modified position of oil level sensor in crankcase
- Incorrect display of oil level in display of on-board computer

Information:

Since September 17, 2004, engines have been produced with a oil sensor positioned lower in the crankcase. In order to prevent an incorrect display of the oil level in the on-board computer display after replacing the engine, the engine number must be checked and the instrument cluster recoded if necessary.

Affected Engines:

The standard, replacement, or EP engines produced as of September 17, 2004 from the following engine numbers:

M96.25 61500716
M96.26 62500725

Tools:
PIWIS Tester with test software, version 5.0/10/2004 (or higher).

Work Procedure:

The engine numbers of the old and replacement engine need to be checked and the instrument cluster recoded if necessary.

1. Read the engine number of the removed engine and the engine number of the replacement engine on the underside of the crankcase (Figure 1, arrow) and make note of it.

Note:
The engine number is required for coding the instrument cluster. Refer to the table shown for applicable steps.

Caution!
The programming operation must not be interrupted. The electrical system battery must be connected to a suitable battery charger with at least 40 A current rating.

> If there is an interruption due to a voltage drop while programming, malfunctions in the instrument cluster cannot be ruled out.

2. Connect charger to the electrical system battery and switch on.

3. Switch on ignition.

4. Connect PIWIS Tester with test software version 5.0/10/2004 (or higher) to the diagnosis connector according to Workshop Manual, Group 0, Diagnosis and read out all fault memories. If one or more faults are stored in the memory, these must be located and eliminated according to OBD manual II.

5. In the menu "Control units", select "Instrument cluster".

6. In the Control units menu "Instrument cluster" under "Function selection", change to "Vehicle versions" > "Oil level characteristics" by confirming with the [>>] key.

7. Select the engine type "Boxster 2,71 / Boxster 3,21" by confirming with the [>>] key.

8. In the display of the diagnosis tester, the display "Please read the engine number of engine" appears. Are the first 3 digits:

- M96.25 615 or
- M96.26 625?"

Corresponding to the engine number noted under step 1, select "Yes" or "No" and confirm with the [>>] key.

9. In the display of the diagnosis tester, the display "Are the engine number digits from the 4th to the 8th position between:

- M96.25 00001 and 00715 or
- M96.26 00001 and 00724?"

Corresponding to the engine number noted under step 1, select "Yes" or "No".

10. Carry out coding by confirming with the [F12] key.

11. The instrument cluster and DME are coded and the Tester display appears: "Oil level characteristic was successfully coded".

12. Return to the start menu.

13. Switch off and disconnect the PIWIS Tester.

14. Switch off the charger and disconnect.

15. Carry out a function check of the instrument cluster.

16. Switch off the ignition.
