6-Speed Manual Transmission:
Gear Shift Lever Does Not Return to Neutral
Date: 7-29-05
Vehicle Type:
Boxster (987)/Boxster S (987)
Model Year:
2005 (5)
Equipment:
6-speed manual transmission G87.20 (I No. 480)
Concern:
Gearshift lever does not return to the neutral position.
Information:
On transmissions produced before the following date of introduction, the bearing cage jams in the shift control lock device. When this happens, the shift control lock device does not have the return force to keep the gear shift lever in its position or to put it in its defined neutral position. The gear shift lever is unable to move freely.
To prevent this, the bearing cage and the shift control lock device have been modified as of the date of introduction.
Date of Introduction:
April 13, 2005 as of transmission number:
G87.20 1006792
Action Required:
If you receive a customer complaint "Gear shift lever does not return to the neutral position" on a vehicle with a transmission that was manufactured before the above-mentioned date of introduction, replace the installed shift control lock device according to the following work procedure. This information is from the Workshop Manual "Removing and installing shift control lock device" by the modified shift control lock devices.
Note!
If the transmission has been removed for other non-related repair work, the shift control lock device should also be replaced with the modified shift control lock device on transmissions produced before the above-mentioned date of introduction.
