W610 - Installing New System Software On The PCM2.1 (Workshop Campaign)

Note
If CDs can no longer be inserted into or ejected from the CD slot on the affected vehicle, the installed PCM2.1 must be replaced.

Information:





This is to inform you of a voluntary Workshop Campaign on certain 2005 and 2006 model year Boxster (987) and Boxster S (987) vehicles. Problems using CDs in PCM2.1 audio CD drive Various fault symptom's as shown can arise when using CDs due to component tolerances in the audio CD drive on the PCM2.1.

Affected Vehicles:

A total of 540 U.S. and Canadian vehicles fall within the scope of this Workshop Campaign.

Very Important!
Use the VIN range below as a general guideline. The VIN can be checked in the Porsche e-DCS/WWS for confirmation of an open recall campaign. Also, the VIN can be checked via the VRU (Voice Response System) for any open listing. Not every vehicle in the below listed range may be affected.





The affected Vehicle Identification Numbers are contained in the VIN
Ranges.

Attachment "A" VIN List

The VIN can be checked in the Porsche e-DCS/WWS for confirmation of an open recall campaign. Also, the VIN can be checked via the VRU (Voice Response System) for any open listing. Refer to affected VIN ranges shown earlier.

Work Procedure:

1. Installing new system software on the PCM2.1.

ATTENTION
Malfunctions in PCM2.1 system connection - data loading operation interrupted

^ If the data loading operation is interrupted due to a voltage drop, malfunctions can occur in the PCM2.1 system connection.

--> Connect a suitable battery charger to the vehicle electrical system battery while you are working.

1.1 Connect a battery charger to the vehicle electrical system battery.

1.2 Switch on ignition.





1.3 Switch on PCM2.1 if necessary by pressing the left rotary knob (--> Figure 1 -Item 1-).

1.4 Open the drawer for the telephone card on the PCM2.1 operator control unit (--> Figure 1 -Item 2-) and remove the telephone card (if there is one there). Close the drawer again.

1.5 Press the Eject button (--> Figure 1 -Item 3-) and remove audio CD from the CD slot (--> Figure 1 -Item 4-), if one was inserted.

1.6 Load PCM2.1 Repair Kit Single CD.

Note
The repair kit performs the update in either two or three stages, depending on the status of the audio CD drive

* Stage 1: Update to Version Repair (obligatory). This involves installing test software, which checks the audio CD drive for errors.

* Stage 2: Firmware update (this update is only performed if the audio CD drive was found to be defective during the update to Version Repair). The firmware update corrects existing errors.

* Stage 3: Software update to version R02 Plus (obligatory): The modified PCM2.1 software is installed here.

ATTENTION
Malfunctions in the PCM2.1 system connection as a result of an incomplete update

^ If the Repair Kit CD-ROM is removed from the CD slot before the update is complete, errors can occur in the PCM2.1 system connection.

--> Only remove the Repair Kit CD-ROM from the CD slot when the software update to "version R02 Plus" (Stage 3) is complete.

1.6.1 Insert the PCM2.1 Repair Kit CD-ROM, Part No. 000.043.205.46.005, into the CD slot (--> Figure 1 Item -4-).

The message "Single CD: checking data CD" appears in the footer of the PCM2.1 display (--> Figure 1 -Item 5-) when you insert the CD-ROM.

When the CD.ROM check is complete. the query "Update software to version Model care B Repair Kit?" appears in the main section of the PCM2.1 display (--> Figure 1 -Item 6-). The option "Yes" is already preselected.

1.6.2 Press the right rotary knob (--> Figure 1 -Item 7-) to confirm the "Yes" option and start the software update.

- Stage 1: Update to Version Repair

The update to "Version Repair" is performed in Stage 1. During the update process, the following messages are displayed in the main section of the PCM2.1 display (--> Figure 1 -Item -6-):

- PCM update

- Device 1 of 1

- Update to Version Repair is being performed

- Status OK

A progress bar shows how the loading operation is progressing.

When the update to Version Repair (Stage 1) is complete, "Update successful" appears in the main section of the PCM2.1 display.

Note
A message appears briefly on the screen to report the successful completion of the update; the PCM2.1 then switches off and on again automatically.

1.6.3 If the PCM2.1 does not switch on again automatically, switch on the PCM2.1 again by pressing the left rotary knob (--> Figure 1 -Item 1-).

Do not take the Repair Kit CD-ROM out of the CD slot.

When the PCM2.1 is switched on, the message "Repair Kit Single CD" appears underneath the Porsche logo on the start screen.

The message "Single CD: checking data CD" appears in the footer of the PCM2.1 display (--> Figure 1 -Item 5-) as soon as the unit is switched on.

Note
If the audio CD drive was found to be defective in Stage 1 - Update to Version Repair, a firmware update is performed in Stage 2.

Otherwise, Stage us followed directly by Stage 3 - Software update to version R02 Plus.

- Stage 2: Firmware update

The progress display "Single CD: Firmware update XX%" appears in the footer of the PCM2.1 display (--> Figure 1 -Item 5-) during the firmware update.

When the firmware update is complete, the CD-ROM may be ejected automatically from the CD slot and then loaded again automatically after a short time.

If the CD-ROM is not loaded again automatically, insert the CD-ROM into the CD slot again manually.

The message "Single CD: checking data CD" appears in the footer of the PCM2.1 display (--> Figure 1 -Item 5-) when the CD-ROM is loaded.

The software update to version R02 Plus (Stage 3) is performed after the firmware update.

- Stage 3: Software update to version R02 Plus

The following messages are displayed in the PCM2.1 display (--> Figure 1 -Item 6-) during the software update to version R02 Plus:

- PCM update

- Device 1 of 1

- Update to version R02 Plus is being performed

- Status OK

A progress bar shows how the loading operation is progressing.

When the software update to version R02 Plus is complete, "Update successful" appears in the main section of the PCM2.1 display.

Note
A message appears briefly on the screen to report the successful completion of the update; the PCM2.1 then switches off and on again automatically.

1.6.4 If the PCM2.1 does not switch on again automatically, switch on the PCM2.1 again by pressing the left rotary knob (--> Figure 1 -Item 1-).

1.6.5 Press the Eject button (--> Figure 1 -Item 3-) and remove the Repair Kit CD-ROM from the CD slot (--> Figure 1 -Item 4-).

1.7 If you removed an audio CD from the CD slot of the PCM2.1 operator control unit, re-insert it.

1.8 If you removed a telephone card from the drawer in the PCM2.1 operator control unit (--> Figure 1 -Item 2-), put it back. Close the drawer again.

1.9 Switch off the ignition.

1.10 Disconnect battery charger.

2. Enter the Workshop Campaign in the Warranty and Maintenance booklet.

Always check for open recall status under the appropriate e-DCS menu options.
