Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Adjustments
Adjusting the drive shaftTools
Preliminary work
1. Remove transmission.
2. Tighten the transmission using engine support 9589 or engine and gear support VW 540 at the assembly support.
3. Drain transmission oil.
4. Disassemble the transmission.
Adjusting the drive shaft
1. Clamp the drive shaft in the vice with protective jaws.
2. Put the measuring bridge 3167 onto the 3rd gear and position the transmission housing on the special tool via the drive shaft.
A - Measuring bridge 3167
3. With a depth gauge, measure the dimension -a- from the housing to the lower drive shaft groove (e.g. dimension a =28.5 mm).
4. With a depth gauge, measure the dimension -b- from the housing to the contact surface of the ball bearing (e.g. dimension b =26.8 mm).
5. Determine dimension for the thickness of the lower circlip (see No. 8 in - Page 98'343537 Disassembling and assembling transmission').
Sample calculation of dimension x
x=a-b=28.5 mm-26.8 mm=1.7 mm
6. Determine the thickness of the circlip in accordance with the table.
7. Force circlip and ball bearing onto the drive shaft with the driver sleeve 30-100.
8. Determine and use the thickest circlip that can still be used.
Subsequent work
1. Assemble transmission.
2. Fill with transmission oil.
3. Remove transmission from assembly support.
4. Install transmission.
