7/07Coolant Pumps Replaced Unnecessarily
Vehicle Type:
Boxster (987)/Boxster S (987)
Cayman/Cayman S
Model Year:
As of 2005
Concerns:
Diagnosis: "Coolant pump leaking"
Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (997)/911 Carrera S (997)
911 Carrera 4 (997)/911 Carrera 4 S (997)
911 Turbo (997)/911 GT3 (997)
Situation:
Test results for coolant pumps supplied with damage code "leaking".
Most of the coolant pumps returned to the Warranty Test Center for analysis with the damage code "leaking" were indeed found to have traces of coolant residue, but a subsequent function test has shown that almost all the coolant pumps that were diagnosed as leaking were actually fully functional and were not leaking.
The visible coolant residue on the coolant pump housing seems to have prompted unnecessary replacement of the coolant pump.
In this case, we must point out that the presence of slight traces of coolant residue on the coolant pump housing is not an indication that the coolant pump is leaking and needs to be replaced.
Before replacing the coolant pump, it is important therefore to use the following criteria to first check whether there are compelling technical grounds for replacing the coolant pump.
Figure 1:
There are slight traces of coolant residue on the coolant pump housing when you examine it during damage diagnosis.
The traces of coolant residue are dry and there are no apparent drops forming (=> Figure 1 -arrow-).
=> In this case, there are no technical grounds for replacing the coolant pump.
You are not authorized to replace the coolant pump under warranty.
Figure 2:
There are significant traces of coolant on the coolant pump housing when you examine it during damage diagnosis.
The traces of coolant are moist and drops of coolant have formed on the housing (=> 2 -arrow-).
=> In this case, the coolant pump must be replaced.
