Installing camshafts
Note:
^ Turn crankshaft in direction of rotation of engine only.
^ Crankshaft is positioned at TDC or just in front (ensures that pistons and valves do not come into contact when installing camshafts) -arrow-.
^ Turn crankshaft in direction of rotation of engine only.
1. Check that the roller-type cam followers are seated correctly on the support elements and on the valves. The roller-type cam followers -1- must lie on the valve stem ends and must be clipped on to the relevant support elements -2-.
2. Coat the sides of the contact surfaces of the bearing covers (guide bearings) with the numbers 7 and 8 (for bearing cover numbering, see figure below) with lubricant.
3. Coat camshaft bearings with engine oil.
Note:
^ When installing the camshafts, the cams for cylinder 1 must point upwards.
^ Make sure that the camshafts are inserted in such a way that the camshaft guide T10068 would fit into the grooves of the camshafts -A-.
4. Place the camshafts carefully into the camshaft bearings of the cylinder head. Observe camshaft coding:
^ Outlet camshaft: An all-round groove is located at marking -A-. Engraving: 022 101.
^ Inlet camshaft: Two all-round grooves are located at marking -B-. Engraving: 022 102.
5. Make sure that the camshafts are inserted in such a way that the camshaft guide T10068 would fit into the grooves of the camshafts -A-.
6. Position bearing covers. Pay attention to the numbering of the bearing covers and always place the correct bearing covers on the correct camshafts.
Note:
^ The numbers of the bearing covers on the outlet camshaft B are even numbers, counting from the timing chain.
^ The numbers of the bearing covers on the inlet camshaft A are uneven numbers, counting from the timing chain.
^ The bearing cover numbers can be read from the inlet side.
^ Bearing covers no. 7 and 8 are thrust bearings and guide bearings.
Note:
^ The bearing covers have a pointed corner, which must always face outward when installed -arrows-.
^ Corners of the bearing covers are facing outwards -arrow A-.
7. Fit 28 M7 fastening nuts on the bearing covers as follows: Tightening torque: 3.5 ft-lb. Torque angle: 45°
Inlet camshaft -A-:
^ Tighten bearing covers 5 and 9 alternately and in a diagonally opposite sequence.
^ Tighten bearing covers 1 and 13 alternately and in a diagonally opposite sequence.
^ Tighten bearing cover 7 evenly.
^ Tighten bearing covers 3 and 11 alternately and in a diagonally opposite sequence.
Inlet camshaft -B-:
^ Tighten bearing covers 6 and 10 alternately and in a diagonally opposite sequence.
^ Tighten bearing covers 2 and 14 alternately and in a diagonally opposite sequence.
^ Tighten bearing cover 8 evenly.
^ Tighten bearing covers 4 and 12 alternately and in a diagonally opposite sequence.
8. Make sure that the camshafts are inserted in such a way that the camshaft guide T10068 fits into the grooves of the camshafts -A-.
Note: Turn the camshaft at the hexagon with an open-ended wrench, if necessary, until the camshaft guide fits into the grooves of the camshafts.
9. Check that the crankshaft is positioned at the TDC of cylinder 1.
Note: Check strainer -2- of timing chain housing -1- and clean or replace if necessary.
10. Fit timing chain housing. To do this, slide the timing chain housing on to the oiled sealing rings of the camshafts. If necessary, press the sealing rings together in the ring stacks -arrows-. Push the timing chain housing up as far as the centering pins.
11. Fit the four fastening screws with securing liquid -arrows-. Tightening torque: 6.0 ft-lb.
Subsequent work
1. Install camshaft adjusters.
2. Set the timing.
3. Install bottom chain case lid.
4. Install top chain case lid.
5. Turn engine through two turns at the crankshaft and check the timing again.
6. Install cylinder head cover.
7. Install engine.
