Removing cylinder head

Note: Observe the most important working regulations and warning notes.

ATTENTION Damage to engine by turning crankshaft against the rotation direction of the engine (engine assembled)!
^ Never rotate crankshaft against the operating direction if the timing drive mechanism is mounted (timing chain jumps over).
^ Proceed carefully while working as otherwise the engine can be damaged.
^ Always turn the engine on the crankshaft and never on the camshaft as the timing chain may jump over.
^ After working on the camshaft wheels, the timing must be set.
^ Please observe the general warning notes and working regulations

1. Position engine at the crankshaft at ignition TDC for cylinder 1. To do this, turn the crankshaft until the pulley is aligned with the TDC mark on the cylinder block -see arrow-.

2. Insert camshaft guide T10068 into the two slits on the camshafts -A-. If the camshaft guide does not fit into the slits, rotate the crankshaft a further 360°.
3. Remove top chain case lid.

Note: For further information on the timing chain, see timing chain'.

4. Remove timing chain between intermediate shaft and camshafts. To do this, remove black guide rail -1- by loosening the two M8 x 43 fastening screws -arrows- and set timing chain to camshaft aside.

Note:
^ The cylinder head screws are arranged in three rows and are longer in the middle.
^ The cylinder head screws are replaced.

5. Unscrew the cylinder head screws from outside to inside in the opposite order to the tightening sequence shown -see figure-.

WARNING Danger of injury and crushing!
^ Risk of injury when lifting the cylinder head.
^ Wear suitable protective gear (e.g. gloves).

6. Remove cylinder head with the help of an assistant and place it on a clean, soft surface.
7. Remove cylinder-head gasket and dispose of it in accordance with legal requirements.

Note: If more extensive work was carried out, e.g. if the cylinder head was replaced, the exhaust manifolds, fuel injectors, fuel distributor pipe, combination valve, timing chain housing and various small parts must also be modified.
