W575 - Deactivating Limit Switch For External Spare Wheel (Workshop Campaign)

Information:
This is to inform you of a voluntary Workshop Campaign on a certain 2003 to 2005 model year Cayenne (V6), Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo vehicles which had the optional external spare tire kit installed. The Tequipment installation kit, part number 955 044 000 21 which were delivered between May, 2003 and June, 2005 included limit switches that could malfunction when water leaked in. This malfunction can prevent the rear lid from opening despite the fact that the spare wheel holder is open fully. To remedy the situation the limit switch for the external spare wheel will need to be deactivated with the PIWIS Tester.

Note:
If your dealership has installed the optional Tequipment Spare Wheel and Tire Mount on a Cayenne, please make an appointment with the customer to have this Workshop Campaign performed as soon as possible.

Action Required:
Deactivate limit switch for external spare wheel with the PIWIS Tester.

Affected Vehicles:








Based on known parts sales records, there are 93 affected vehicles which had the Tequipment Spare Wheel and Tire Mount installed. Of these 93 vehicles there are 9 VINs which have been verified. Please consult your parts and service records to locate the affected vehicles and arrange with the customer to perform this Workshop Campaign.

Attachment "A":

Work Procedure

Deactivate limit switch for external spare wheel with the PIWIS Tester.

1. Connect a charger with a rated current of at least 40 A to the power feed for the electrical system battery in the engine compartment and switch it on.

Note
The PIWIS Tester instructions take precedence and in the event of a discrepancy these are the instructions that must be followed. A discrepancy may arise with later software versions for example.

2. Connect the PIWIS Tester with installed test software version 10.0/06/2005 (or higher) to the data link connector and switch it on.

3. Switch on ignition.

4. Select "Cayenne" as the vehicle type in the PIWIS Tester main menu.

5. Using the PIWIS Tester, select "Control unit search" under Control units in the main menu. If one or more faults are stored that do not relate to the "limit stop for external spare wheel", the faults must be located and corrected using the PIWIS Tester in accordance with "Guided Fault Finding". This work cannot be invoiced under workshop campaign number W575. After correcting the faults and erasing the fault memory, continue with Step 6.

6. Select "Rear/Doors" in the Control units menu and confirm by pressing [>>].

7. In the Control units menu "Rear/Doors function selection", switch to "Identification" and press [>>] twice to select "Extended identification".








8. In the "Extended identification" menu, read out the "Program and data status" of the rear control unit and proceed in accordance with the table.

Note
If the control unit is replaced, the vehicle data must be readout with the PIWIS Tester and copied to the new control unit (if possible).

9. Replace rear control unit.

9.1 Replace rear control unit according to instructions in --> Workshop Manual '578919 Removing and installing control unit for rear convenience systems (rear control unit)' and install a new rear control unit.

9.2 Code the new rear control unit according to instructions in --> Workshop Manual '57819 Removing and installing control unit for rear convenience systems (rear control unit) - section on "Coding".

10. Re-code rear control unit.

10.1. In the Control units menu "Rear/Doors function selection", switch to "Coding" and press [>>] to confirm your selection.

The message "Reading out coding" appears on the Tester.

10.2 In the "Coding" menu item, switch to "Limit switch for ext. spare wheel installed" and confirm your selection by pressing [>>].

10.3 In the "Limit switch for ext. spare wheel installed" menu item, switch to "Limit switch for ext. spare wheel not installed" and press [F8] to code this setting.

The rear control unit is coded and the message: "Limit switch for ext. spare wheel not installed" appears on the Tester display.

10.4 Release the spare wheel holder, swivel it out to the limit position, then swivel it in by approx. 10° and check whether the rear lid can be opened at this position.

10.5 Close rear lid and spare wheel mount.

11. Press [>>] to confirm that you want to switch to the "Rear/Doors" function selection.

12. In the "Extended identification" menu, readout and note the "Program and data status" of the rear control unit.

13. Press [<<]to confirm that you want to switch to the "Rear/Doors" function selection.

14. In the "Rear/Doors" function selection under "Installed components list", press [>>] to read out and note the "Porsche Part No." of the rear control unit.





Note
New parameters can only be set for the rear control unit if the part number and software version in the relevant row of the shown correspond to the data that was read out.

If you go ahead and set parameters, however, the message "Control unit is up-to-date. Parameter setting not necessary! Continue with >>" appears on the PIWIS Tester.

15. If the "Program and data status" (Step 12) and the "Part number" you read out (Step 14) correspond to the entries in the table.

- Set new parameters for the rear control unit, continue with Step 16.

- If the data you read out does not match, continue with Step 19.

16. In the "Rear/Doors" function selection, switch to "Parameter settings" and confirm your selection by pressing [>>].

17. Set new parameters for the rear control unit by pressing [F8].

Once you have set the parameters successfully, the message "Parameter setting completed successfully! Continue with >>" appears on the PIWIS Tester.

18. Please "Switch ignition off and on" according to instructions on the PIWIS Tester.

19. Return to the Start menu.

20. Switch off and disconnect the PIWIS Tester.

21. Switch off the ignition.

22. Switch off and disconnect charger.

23. Enter the Workshop Campaign in the Warranty and Maintenance booklet.
