Vehicle Jerking / Misfires During Acceleration

Eliminating Symptoms - Engine: Re-Programming DME Control Unit (Vehicle Jerking / Misfires During Acceleration)

Tools

General information
Symptom
Vehicle jerking during acceleration; driver finds that vehicle is low on power.

Cause
Mixture becomes lean for a short time in combination with valve lift deactivation during highly dynamic drive-off manoeuvres.

Remedial Action
If a complaint is received, re-program the DME control unit using a modified data record.

Tools and Materials
PIWIS Tester 9718 with test software version 22.000 (or higher) installed.

Programming DME control unit

Caution
A fault is entered in the fault memory and control unit programming is aborted due to undervoltage.
- Increased current draw during diagnosis or control unit programming can cause a drop in voltage, which can result in one or more fault entries and the abnormal termination of the programming process.

Before commencing work, connect a suitable battery charger with a current rating of at least 40 A to the jump-start terminals in the engine compartment.

Information
- The procedure described here is based on test software version 22.000.
- The PIWIS Tester instructions take precedence and in the event of a discrepancy, these are the instructions that must be followed.
- A discrepancy may arise with later software versions for example.

1. PIWIS Tester 9718 with installed test software version 22.000 (or higher) must be connected to the vehicle before switching on the System Tester. Switch on the ignition and press the double arrow key to continue.
2. Call up the "Diagnosis" menu and select vehicle type "997". Press the double arrow key to continue.
3. Select "DME" control unit in the "Control units" menu and confirm by pressing the double arrow key.
4. Select "Control unit programming" in the "997 function selection" menu and confirm by pressing the double arrow key.
5. Select "Program control unit" in the "997 control unit programming" menu and confirm by pressing the double arrow key.
6. Read and follow the programming instructions on the PIWIS Tester.
Press the double arrow key to continue.
7. Select the vehicle type and confirm by pressing the double arrow key.
8. Select transmission type "Tiptronic" and confirm by pressing the double arrow key.
9. Select model year "As of MY 05" and confirm by pressing the double arrow key.
10. Exhaust standard must be selected. Confirm your selection by pressing the double arrow key.
11. Enter the VIN and press the double arrow key. Then confirm your entry by pressing F7.

Information:
- If the DME control unit is re-programmed for a vehicle, the DME code specified in the PPN and the immobiliser code must be entered in the DME control unit.
- The codes are available in the PPN (PIWIS info system / Job Management / Vehicle code information) or from your importer.

12. Enter the old DME programming code and press the double arrow key. Then confirm your entry by pressing F7.
13. When you are prompted to enter the New DME programming code, also enter the Old DME programming code and press the double arrow key. Then confirm your entries by pressing F7.
14. Enter the old immobiliser code and press the double arrow key. Then confirm your entry by pressing F7.
15. When you are prompted to enter the New immobiliser code, also enter the Old immobiliser code and press the double arrow key. Then confirm your entries by pressing F7.
16. Press F8 to start programming the DME control unit.
A progress bar appears showing the progress of the programming procedure. Do not interrupt programming.

Information: If programming is interrupted (e.g. due to a voltage drop or if communication is aborted, etc.), programming must be repeated.

17. Once programming is complete (progress bar shows 100 %), follow the instructions on the PIWIS Tester (switch ignition off and on, etc.).
18. Programming ends with the message "Programming was completed successfully" in the PIWIS Tester display. Confirm the message by pressing the double arrow key.
19. When control unit programming is complete, press the double back-arrow key to return to the 'Control units' menu (list of control units) and activate the control unit search.
20. Read out the fault memories of the control units and erase fault memory entries in the control units that are caused by DME control unit programming (e.g. "DME control unit").
If other faults are present, these must be found and corrected.
This work cannot be settled under warranty.

Information: In the US and Canada, the Ready status must be obtained after programming the DME control unit (e.g. by performing a test drive or by running short tests using the PIWIS Tester). If in doubt, talk to your importer.

21. Press the double back-arrow key to return to the PIWIS Tester Start menu.
22. Shut down the PIWIS Tester and disconnect it from the vehicle.
23. Switch off ignition.
24. Switch off and disconnect the battery charger.
25. Carry out a test drive and read out the fault memory again.
