Front Hardtop Latch Causes Creaking Noises

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera Cabriolet (997)/911 Carrera S Cabriolet (997)

Model Year:
As of 2005

Equipment:
Hardtop | No.550

Concerns:
Guide in latching hook of hardtop latch.

Situation:
Creaking noises from front hardtop latch.

On the vehicles listed above, which were produced before December 19, 2004, creaking noises can be heard from around the front hardtop latch while driving if a hardtop is installed.

This is caused by an ungreased guide in the latching hook of the hardtop latch. The guide is greased on the vehicles as of the date of introduction specified below.

In the event of a complaint, the guide in the latching hook of the hardtop latch must be greased using Krytox GPL2O5 grease.

Date of Introduction:

As of December 19, 2004

Parts Info.:
-->000.043.206.65 New/Krytox GPL2D5 grease

Tools:
Brush (small paintbrush)

Work Procedure:

Grease guide in latching hook of hardtop latch.

1. Remove cover of locking lever for hardtop latch --> Workshop Manual "670279 Removing and installing hardtop".

Note
When the hardtop is installed, Krytox GPL2O5 grease can drip when greasing the guide. The areas below, especially the instrument panel and center console must be properly covered with a shop towel.

2. Use a brush to coat the sides of the contact area of the guide pin and latching hook with grease (-->Figure 1-Arrows, Item 1-).

3. Grease the gate of the latching hook with a brush (--> Figure 1-Arrows, Item 2-).

4. Press the locking lever several times in succession (open and close the front hardtop latch) to distribute the grease around the guide.

5. Replace cover of locking lever, --> Workshop Manual
"610219 Removing and installing hardtop".
