Eliminating power transmission symptoms - Reworking preselector cable





General information

Symptoms

Reverse gear cannot be engaged.

Causes and remedial action

On 911 Carrera (997) and 911 Carrera S (997) vehicles with manual transmission, a preselector cable installed in the gearshift bracket under tensile stress can prevent the gate of reverse gear from being reached. As a result, reverse gear cannot be engaged.

In the event of a complaint, the adjustment pin of the preselector cable must be loosened and the preselector cable must be readjusted in the gearshift bracket.

If the complaint cannot be remedied after readjustment of the preselector cable, the transmission must be replaced.

Tools and materials

Locking bridge 9619/1

Preliminary Work

1. Remove shift-lever knob.
2. Remove center console trim.
3. Remove center console cover.
4. Remove center console.

Reworking preselector cable

1. Put transmission in neutral (no gear engaged).
2. Push bayonet lock for the preselector connection (blue) as far back as it will go and turn to the right until the catch engages.
3. Remove the adjustment pin of the preselector cable from the preselector connection.

Information
When installing the adjustment pin, only use the modified locking bridge P 9619/1 (green).

4. Locking bridge 9619/1 must be clipped on at the gearshift lever from the right using the retaining lugs.
5. Locking bridge P 9619/1 on the gearshift lever must then be pushed down and engaged in the gearshift bracket.
6. Insert the adjustment pin of the preselector cable without tension in the preselector connection and press down firmly until the adjustment pin locks with an audible click. -A-

7. Lock preselector connection. Turn blue bayonet lock anti-clockwise and allow to slide over the adjustment pin of the preselector cable -1 and 2-
8. Remove locking bridge.
9. Check if reverse gear can be engaged.

Subsequent work

1. Install center console.
2. Install center console cover.
3. Install center console trim.
4. Install shift-lever knob.
