Roll Bar: Description and Operation
Roll-over ProtectionTo increase occupant protection in the event of the vehicle rolling over, the automatically extending roll-over protection system familiar from the predecessor was further improved for the new 911 Carrera/S Cabriolet. Combined with A-pillars reinforced with high-strength steel pipes, this system offers the occupants improved survival space in the event of the car overturning. The use of a standard roll-over protection system instead of a fixed system allows unrestricted views of the harmonious body line, even when the convertible top is down, and a total top-down driving experience.
In the event of the vehicle overturning, a central roll-over sensor located in the airbag control unit triggers two roll-over bars within fractions of a second. Sensors detect changes in tilt of the body, longitudinal and transverse acceleration, as well as road surface contact.
Actuators then release a locking pawl which causes the spring-loaded roll-over bar to extend. The roll-over sensor system, which is fully diagnosable, constantly monitors the function of all sensors and actuators. If a system error occurs, it will be indicated by a warning light in the instrument cluster.
