T
T
TCDD
Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, one of the chlorodioxins (See: Dioxins). There are a total of 22 isomer dioxin compounds with four chlorine atoms. TCDD is one of the most toxic chemical compounds known but there are several naturally (biogenically) created compounds that are more poisonous.
Technical guide concentration
See: TRC.
Technical Inspection Associations
Abbreviation: T/V. Self-monitoring associations for the prevention of accidents and damage in industrial plants (e.g. boilers). The centers for technical inspection of automobiles are connected to these associations in part.
Technical instruction
See: TI.
Technology
The trade of acquiring, developing and processing building materials and raw materials, the chemical treatment in chemical technology and the physical treatment in physical technology. Technological testing is part of material testing.
Temperature
Temperature is:
1. General: the bodily perception of heat and coldness, a measure of the heat content of a body.
2. Climatology: the air temperature as measured by a thermometer that is protected from radiation and well ventilated in thermal conduction equilibrium with the surrounding air.
Tensides
Surface active substances (e.g. See: Soaps, Washing agents) with elongated asymmetrical polar structure and with one hydrophobic and one hydrophilic molecule part (makes water-soluble, e.g. sulfate, sulfonate group). In sewage and water treatment plants, biodegradable tensides are subject to biological decomposition and lose their surface activity in the process. Biologically hard tensides are only biodegradable to an insufficient extent. The effect of tensides, namely wetting, emulsification and washing, is based on the tendency towards oriented adsorption on surfaces, wherein the hydrophobic group of the tenside molecule (usually hydrocarbon chain) strives to project out of the aqueous phase.
The Green Dot
This symbol is a trademark of Duales System Deutschland GmbH (DSD) for taking back and utilizing used packaging materials (See: Packaging regulations). Licensees are manufacturers or distributors, which print the green dot symbol on the packaging that they place on the market in order to distinguish themselves as participants in the Duales System Deutschland program. These manufacturers and distributors pay scaled licensing fees to DSD for retrieval and recycling of the packaging that they place on the market.
Thermoplastic
Becomes soft and malleable when warmed. This procedure can be repeated with thermoplastics.
Thermoplastics
See: Plastics.
Threshold of audibility
The sound pressure, dependent on the frequency and type of noise, that is just barely audible to the human ear.
Threshold value
Minimum value of a stimulus size required for generating an effect (stimulus threshold).
TI
Abbreviation for technical instructions. General administration guidelines for plants that require authorization issued by the German government as Noise TI and Air TI; legally based on the Federal Pollutant Control Act.
- Noise TI: contains guide values for noise immissions, divided according to the type of utilization in the corresponding areas.
- Air TI: contains guide values for immissions as well as for emission values that are specific to substances and plants.
- Municipal waste TI: This new administrative guideline places strict environmental restrictions on the disposal of household garbage and industrial waste that is similar to household garbage, construction waste and sludge. These instructions are meant to help districts and cities in maintaining safe disposal practices.
Tolerance
Tolerance is:
1. the ability of an organism to tolerate certain influences without noticeable damage.
2. in foodstuffs and feed, the acceptable or accepted Maximum amounts of (pesticide) traces per kilogram of foodstuff or feed, expressed in ppm.
Tolerance limit
Highest acceptable concentration of hazardous substances in the environment that can not be exceeded without causing harm to living organisms.
Total toxicity
Total amount of contamination due to pollutants in food, water and air. See: Synergy.
Toxic equivalent
The amount of poison required to poison 1 kilogram of laboratory animal.
Toxic Substances Control Act
See: TSCA.
Toxicity
The extent to which a substance is poisonous. The following definitions apply:
- acute toxicity: the extent to which an active ingredient or product is poisonous upon a single exposure
- subchronic toxicity: the extent to which the active ingredient is poisonous upon repeated exposure within a relatively short period of time relative to the organism's lifespan
- chronic toxicity: the extent to which an active ingredient is poisonous upon repeated exposure over a longer period of time
Toxicology
The science of poisons and antidotes; part of pharmacology.
Trade control
Work inspection or monitoring of technical protection measures for life and health of employees and population as well as inspection of work time by trade supervisory agencies with trade supervisors to be appointed by the district government.
Trade regulations
Abbreviation: (GewO. Ges.) German trade regulations law of June 21, 1869 (North German Federation) that regulates practicing a trade, adopted for the German Reich in 1900, modified many times and enhanced upon by amendment (trade law); now German federal law. The regulations for industrial plants were adopted from the trade regulation into the German Federal Emission Control Act with the exception of section 24.
Transport Accident Information and Support System
See: TUIS.
TRC
Abbreviation for technical reference concentration. The concentration of a hazardous, especially cancer-producing and gene-changing work substance (gas, vapors, suspended matter), in the air as an indication of the protective measures and monitoring technical measurements to be implemented at the place of work. TRCs are only assigned to work materials for which no MAC values can currently be determined. TRCs have to be constantly adjusted to reflect current technical development as well as the analytical and technological monitoring possibilities at hand. Adherence to the TRCs at the workplace should reduce risk of harm to health, but can not guarantee freedom from all risk.
TSCA
Abbreviation for Toxic Substances Control Act. Environmental chemical law in the USA in effect since January 1, 1977. It is considered to be the most extensive environmental chemicals law with largest variety of options for government intervention. Adherence to this law is monitored by the EPA.
TUIS
German abbreviation for the Transport Accident Information and Support System, a voluntary support system provided by the chemical industry for transport accidents with "hazardous goods" to minimize the potential risks of such accidents (which and how hazardous goods may be transported, how dangerous goods are to be packaged and labeled, how the means of transport are to be labeled).
