Engine, Cooling and Exhaust: Description and Operation
General
The Boxster (987) 2.7 liter and Boxster S (987) 3.2 liter engines are designed for a high specific output with high torque over a wide rpm range as well as extremely good emission and fuel consumption values. The fuel/air mixture is electronically controlled by the Motronic control module ME 7.8_40. A further improvement in the gas cycle has been attained by redesigning the exhaust systems, in particular the rear mufflers. These measures have been instrumental in increasing power output, reducing weight and ensuring compliance with the statutory requirements regarding exhaust emissions. The increased torque in the lower rpm range results from a double-flow distribution pipe with induction flap, which is also instrumental in ensuring that the maximum torque is available over a broad rpm range.
The Boxster (987) 2.7 liter engine and the Boxster S (987) 3.2 liter engines are basically similar in design to the previous model year 2004 2.7 and 3.2 versions. As a result of optimization measures in the areas of intake air routing, fuel/air mixture preparation and the exhaust system, the gas cycle has been further improved and the power output has been increased by 12 hp (8 kW) for the Boxster 2.7 liter, and 20 hp (15 kW) for the Boxster S 3.2 liter engines when compared to the previous 2004 versions. Even more impressive than the actual power ratings is the extra acceleration which the new engine offers in the low and middle rpm range. The maximum torque is available over a broad rpm range. This enables high performance and good flexibility. Both engine have the typical Porsche sports car sound and meet all emission requirements.
Development aims for the Boxster (987) and Boxster S (987):
- High specific performance and driving dynamics.
- High torque over a wide rpm range
- Reliable fulfillment of all regulatory emission requirements
- Low specific fuel consumption
- Attractive, Porsche exhaust note
- Reduction in maintenance costs
- Reduction in overall weight
