General warning notes for airbag and belt tensioner units
Disposal of airbag and belt tensioner units
INFORMATION: Country-specific statutory regulations and legislation based on them which go beyond these instructions must always be observed and take precedence over these instructions.
- Airbag units are pyrotechnical items and can pose an environmental hazard.
- For this reason, non-ignited airbag units or entire vehicles must not be disposed of as normal scrap, refuse or in other final storage facilities.
- If the vehicle suffered fire damage which caused one or several airbags or belt tensioners to be triggered, additional ignition with the adapter cable must be carried out in order to ensure that only parts without pyrotechnical contents are scrapped.
- In the case of airbag units which cannot be ignited or if the conditions for safe ignition are insufficient, always return the airbag units to Porsche or the respective importer in their original packaging.
Safety procedures when igniting airbag units
CAUTION: Uncontrolled triggering of airbag units.
- Danger of injury and damage to property as a result of incorrect handling of airbag units.
- Before disposal, render the airbag units harmless by electrical ignition and while observing all precautionary measures, thereby preventing them being used incorrectly.
- Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.
- Other normal accident prevention regulations must also be observed.
- Ignite airbag units only in their securely installed, original condition in the vehicle.
- Carry out ignition only in suitable, free areas.
- Use only the ignition tool intended for that purpose.
- All loose objects must first be removed from the expansion area of the airbag.
- Each ignition circuit of all airbag units and belt tensioners must be ignited individually.
- Persons possibly affected must be informed of the resulting noise beforehand.
- Use ear protectors.
- Maintain a safety distance by utilising the entire cable length of the ignition tool.
- Do not connect the voltage source until all other preparations are complete.
- Choose a place in front of the vehicle. This also applies to persons not involved.
- Perform ignition with the doors closed and the side windows open.
- Do not approach the vehicle until after a waiting period (approx. 3 minutes) if ignition fails.
- Allow airbag units to cool down under observation following ignition.
- Avoid skin contact with ignited airbag units.
CAUTION: Unintentional triggering when ignition tool is connected.
- Danger of injury and damage to property as a result of incorrect handling of airbag units.
- Remove ignition key. Disconnect and insulate the ground line on the battery. Work instructions after disconnecting the battery
- After the battery is disconnected, always wait for 1 minute before disconnecting the airbag plugs.

Connecting ignition tool
Driver's side
INFORMATION: This is a two-stage airbag module which must be ignited separately.
- Remove trim panel for steering column. Refer to Removing and installing trim.
1. Disconnect plug from the airbag at the steering column switch and first insert the plug with marking A (1st stage) of adapter cable No. 9257/4.
2. Connect ignition device No. 9257 to the 2-pin plug E of adapter cable No. 9257/4.
3. Place the ignition device in front of the vehicle through the door gap.
4. After triggering, repeat the work step with the plug with the marking B (2nd stage).
Passenger's side
INFORMATION: Deformation of the instrument panel bracket must be expected after triggering of the passenger's airbag unit. An installed airbag unit should be intentionally triggered in installed state only if the vehicle is to be scrapped. If the instrument panel bracket is deformed in the area of the airbag mount, the instrument panel bracket will have to be replaced.
This is a two-stage airbag module which must be ignited separately.
- Remove glove compartment, Refer to Removing and installing glove compartment
- Remove passenger's airbag unit. Refer to Removing and installing passenger's airbag unit
1. If the instrument panel is to be re-used, remove the instrument panel. Refer to Removing and installing the instrument panel
2. Connect the adapter cables 9257/3 (left) and 9257/5 (right) to the removed airbag unit. Re-install airbag unit with the adapter cables.
3. Connect ignition device No. 9257 to the 2-pin plug E of adapter cable No. 9257/3.
4. Place the ignition device in front of the vehicle through the door gap.
5. After triggering, repeat the work step with adapter cable No. 9257/5.
Side airbag
INFORMATION: Before disconnecting the battery, move the seat to the uppermost position.
1. Unlock and separate the electrical plug for the seat.
2. Connect plug of adapter cable 9257/6 to the electrical plug for the seat.
3. Connect ignition device No. 9257 to the 2-pin plug of adapter cable No. 9257/6.
