Fault Code 0165

Fault code 0165

Multi-function switch (P/N on transmission)

Diagnostic conditions
- Internal KESSY control module function test
- Move selector lever from 'P' to 'D' and back to 'P' again
- Try to start engine

Possible cause of fault
- Short circuit to B+ or open circuit in wiring
- Short circuit to ground
- Multi-function switch faulty (for automatic transmission only)
- Plug connection on multi-function switch plug C not connected
- Control unit faulty

WARNING:
Danger of personal injury by moving vehicle independently with gear engaged, engine running and switching to any driving programme setting if plug C of the existing transmission wiring is not connected or is not connected correctly.
- Before starting the engine in a vehicle with automatic transmission, move the selector lever to position 'N' and put the parking brake on firmly.
- Plug C of the existing transmission wiring (for multi-function switch, etc.) must always be connected before starting the engine

Affected pins
- KESSY control module plug A: 'Pin 54'
- On existing transmission wiring, transmission plug C: 'Pin 2' (for automatic transmission only)

Diagnosis/troubleshooting

NOTE:
Visual inspection: In the next troubleshooting section, please check first that the affected pins on the KESSY control module plug connection are neither damaged nor corroded. The wiring and plugs of the affected components must also be checked for external damage and correct contacts. Repair damaged or corroded pins if possible, otherwise replace affected pins. Repair or replace damaged wires.

NOTE: Conventional diagnosis/troubleshooting cannot be performed for the fault type 'short circuit to B+', which is displayed using the 'F8' key in the 9588 Porsche System Tester II. The reason for this is that the ignition cannot be switched on when there is no control module connected. As a result, it is not possible to differentiate uniquely between a short circuit to terminal 30 and a short circuit to terminal 15. A thorough visual inspection of components and wiring must therefore be carried out before replacing a control module.
