Removing camshafts
Note: Turn crankshaft in direction of rotation of engine only.
1. Insert camshaft guide T10068 into the grooves of the camshafts -A-. Turn crankcase a further 360° if necessary.
2. Remove top and bottom chain case lid.
3. Remove guide rail -1- by loosening two fastening screws (M8 x 50) -arrows-.
Note: Always counter camshafts at the hexagon because the camshaft guide can break!
4. Secure camshafts at the hexagon -arrows-.
5. Undo fastening screws on camshaft adjusters -23- while simultaneously countering the camshafts.
6. Remove camshaft adjusters.
7. Unscrew timing chain housing. To do this, undo four fastening screws (M6 x 30) -arrows- and pull the timing chain housing off the centering pins and camshafts.
Note:
^ Set bearing covers down on a clean surface one after the other according to installation position.
^ The bearing covers have a pointed corner, which must always face outward when installed -arrows-.
8. Remove camshaft bearing covers (M7 fastening nuts) in the following sequence:
-A- Inlet camshaft
^ First remove bearing covers 1 and 13.
^ Remove bearing covers 3 and 11.
^ Remove bearing cover 7.
^ Loosen and remove bearing covers 5 and 9 alternately and in a diagonally opposite sequence.
-B- Outlet camshaft
^ First remove bearing covers 2 and 14.
^ Remove bearing covers 4 and 12.
^ Remove bearing cover 8.
^ Loosen and remove bearing covers 6 and 10 alternately and in a diagonally opposite sequence.
Note:
^ The numbers of the bearing covers on the outlet camshaft B are even numbers, counting from the timing chain.
^ The numbers of the bearing covers on the inlet camshaft A are uneven numbers, counting from the timing chain.
^ The bearing cover numbers can be read from the inlet side.
^ Corners of the bearing covers are facing outwards.
^ Bearing covers no. 7 and 8 are thrust bearings and guide bearings.
9. Remove camshafts carefully from the cylinder head and put down on a clean surface for the appropriate bearing covers.
