Auxiliary Heating System - Ticking Sound

Technical Information

Cayenne (9PA)

1/06 ENU 8245

Auxiliary Heating: Ticking Sound From Fuel Metering Pump

Vehicle Type:
Cayenne/Cayenne S/Cayenne Turbo

Model Year:
As of 2003 up to 2006

Equipment:
Auxiliary heating (I No. 7VL, 7VE)

Concerns:
Auxiliary heating:
Modified fuel metering pump mount (referred to as "metering pump" below).

Situation:
Operating noise (ticking) from metering pump can be heard inside the vehicle.

When auxiliary heating is switched on, the operating noise from the metering pump (ticking, approx. 1 Hz) can be transmitted over the body into the vehicle interior and can be heard when the vehicle is stationary. The noise can no longer be heard once the engine coolant reaches a temperature of approx. 167 degree F. (75 degree C).

The metering pump mount was modified as of the end of November 2005 (new rubber mounting support); the fuel hoses were adapted accordingly (--> -X = direction of travel-).

Action Required:
In the event of a complaint, the new mounting support must be installed with the modified fuel hoses. The previously installed metering pump will still be used.

Date of Introduction:
End of November 2005

Work Procedure:
Installing new mounting support and modified fuel hoses. The existing metering pump will still be used.

1. Remove rear cardan shaft, --> Workshop Manual '393519 Removing and installing rear cardan shaft'.

2. Remove metering pump, --> Workshop Manual'824519 Removing and installing fuel pump and then remove metering pump support, screw and fuel hoses.

3. Pre-assemble metering pump with parts from the modification kit according to --> -2 to 5-. Place lug-type hose clamps (--> -6-) in position without closing them.

NOTE: Observe installation position of electric plug connection for metering pump: At 4 'o clock position in forward direction of travel.

Only close lug-type hose clamps after the pre-assembled parts of the metering pump have been checked and adjusted, if necessary, to ensure correct positioning with respect to the fuel line and sufficient clearance (at least 20 mm) from the body.

4. Fit fuel hose (--> -7-) on fuel line. Place lug-type hose clamp (--> -8-) in position without closing it.

NOTE: Only close lug-type hose clamp after the fuel hose has been checked and adjusted, if necessary, to ensure correct positioning with respect to the metering pump and sufficient clearance (at least 20 mm) from the body.

5. Install pre-assembled metering pump and secure on the fuel line and fuel hose with lug-type hose clamps (--> -9-).

Connect wire harness connector to the metering pump (it must engage audibly). Tightening torque for M6 screw (--> -1-): 6 Nm (4.5 ftlb.)

6. Install the cardan shaft, --> Workshop Manual "39351 '9Removing and installing rear cardan shaft.

NOTE: Clearance between the metering pump and cardan shaft must be at least 20 mm. Adjust the clearance, if necessary, by bending up the holder.
