Tire Monitoring System: Description and Operation

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (RDK)

For the first time, a tire pressure monitoring system (RDK) is available as an option (I no.) on the new 911 Carrera/S.

The RDK offers a significant improvement in safety by continuously monitoring the air pressure of each tire. The system gives the driver an early warning of a pressure loss within the tire, creeping (normal reduction in pressure caused by diffusion) or even sudden pressure loss in the tires. A tire blowout due to heat build up from driving with a underinflated tire can be prevented with this system. It also does away with the need for regular air pressure checks.

Another advantage is that having the correct air pressure reduces tire wear (a pressure reduction of 4.3 psi/0.3 bar from the recommended tire pressure can reduce the service life of tires by up to 25%).

RDK System Design

The tire pressure monitoring system comprises the following components:
- 4 wheel transmitters
- 4 digital antennas
- RDK control module
