Clutch: Checking Fluid Levels

Clutch: Checking fluid levels

Information

Warning
System failure if incorrect fluid is used.
^ Danger of injury and damage from possible system failure.

- Only fill Pentosin CHF hydraulic fluid into the two supply tanks.

Pentosin CHF can be ordered under the following part number:

Delivery quantity: 6 liters = 000.043.203.33. Container volume: 1 liter cans (6 ea.).

Power steering and clutch control system are supported by hydraulic auxiliary forces. A tandem servo pump is available instead of the servo pump for the steering (997 naturally aspirated engine) for this purpose. Both systems share one supply tank (reservoir). This -Pentosin reservoir- is located in the engine compartment.

A second supply tank (Pentosin reservoir) -2- for the clutch actuating hydraulic system can also be found in the luggage compartment area. This second reservoir -2- is located under the left cover -A-. On right-hand drive vehicles it is located under the right cover.

Front Pentosin reservoir (luggage compartment)

Information
^ The supply tank for power steering and the clutch booster circuit is located in the engine compartment.
^ The second supply tank for the clutch actuating hydraulic system is secured under a cover in the luggage compartment.

Checking Pentosin hydraulic fluid in engine compartment

There are two markings on the dipstick located on the cap. One area is marked "Cold" for when the engine is cold - "Cold" mark: approx.20° C (68°F) and the other is marked "Hot" for when the engine is warmed up - "Hot" mark: approx.80°C (176°F).

Check the fluid level (Pentosin) with the engine switched off and cold (approx. 20°C [68°F]).

Warning
Risk of material damage if too much Pentosin is used or if Pentosin comes into contact with the coolant hoses when filling or topping up. Multiple steering operations (maneuvering) and/or actuating the clutch with the engine switched off affect the fluid level in the supply tank. The fluid level rises.
^ Coolant hoses may swell. Risk of fire if escaping Pentosin comes into contact with hot components and ignites.

- To prevent any overfilling and thus any resulting overflow, the engine should be run for approx. 20 seconds immediately after checking the fluid level.

- If coolant hoses come into contact with Pentosin, clean them thoroughly with water IMMEDIATELY. Replace visibly swollen coolant hoses.

1. Start the engine and let it run at idle speed for approx. 20 seconds. Switch off the engine.
2. Open engine cover. Open reservoir cap.

3. Wipe off dipstick. Close and then re-open the cap. The fluid level should lie in the hatched area beneath the "Cold" mark (mark = maximum level) at - "Cold" mark: approx.20°C (68°F). Top up with Pentosin if necessary. The upper mark "Hot" is for a fluid temperature of - "Hot" mark: approx.80°C (176°F).

Do not add too much Pentosin! The respective marks are for the maximum fluid level at a "COLD" or "HOT" temperature. When the engine is hot, the fluid level must not exceed the "Hot max" mark!

Warning
Danger of filling (topping up) with incorrect fluid if the wrong caps are inadvertently placed on the three reservoirs (brake fluid/water/Pentosin).
^ Risk of material damage and personal injury as a result of system failure caused by filling with incorrect fluid (confusing the reservoirs).

- If fluid is being filled into several reservoirs in the luggage compartment (brake fluid/water/Pentosin), carry out these filling procedures in sequence (always screw off just one cap at a time) so that the caps of the three reservoirs do not get mixed up! This eliminates the possibility of another person filling in the wrong fluids at a later stage!

Information
^ The fluid level on the transparent supply tank should always lie between the Min. and Max. marking.
^ Hold the supply tank with your hand (counter) while you loosen and tighten the cap.
^ Pentosin CHF hydraulic fluid should not be topped up until the fluid level is at the lower marking.

The reservoir -2- supplies the clutch actuating hydraulic system with Pentosin.

Pentosin reservoir for clutch control system

1. Remove left cover -A- (over Pentosin reservoir). On right-hand drive vehicles the Pentosin reservoir is located under the right cover.

Important information

1 - Brake fluid reservoir/black cap with yellow marking.
2 - Pentosin reservoir for clutch control system/green cap with white border.
3 - Washer-fluid reservoir/blue cap.

2. If the fluid level on the transparent supply tank -2- does not lie between the Min. and Max. marking, screw off the cap. Counter at the reservoir while doing this. Top up as far as the Max. marking with Pentosin CHF hydraulic fluid.

3. Screw on cap (green) -2-. Counter at the reservoir while doing this.
4. Fit cover over Pentosin reservoir.
